The Telegraph reports that, according to a leaked paper, the EU is preparing to cut the “disproportionate” amount of British television shown on the Continent after Brexit. The European Commission has been asked to carry out a study on the risks British programmes pose to the EU’s “cultural diversity”. This prospect of British TV becoming less dominant on European screens by EU diktat has caused a belated reassessment of just how much Europe loves British television.
From Broadchurch to Bake Off, The Crown or Downtown Abbey and Mister Bean, British TV is how Britain presents itself to the world.
“Foreign broadcasters eagerly attend showcases of our programmes as they bid to find the next big thing. They know that British telly gets bums on seats,” The Telegraph writes.
It doesn’t make me happy at all that Brexit could mean that we see less of British humour and drama on TV.
