Ten Years Ago: My Match of a Lifetime
This Sunday the Championship Play-off Final is played at Wembley. Huddersfield and Nottingham Forest are battling out which Club will follow already promoted Fulham and Bournemouth and play in the Premier League next season. It was ten years ago, on 19 May 2012, when West Ham have won their latest play-off final at Wembley to secure being back to the best football league in the world.
That was my first visit to New Wembley and it is one of the games I have been to which I will never forget – and not just for one reason.

The current season of 2021/22 will without doubt be one to be remembered as a “massive season” by the West Ham faithful. With wins over FC Sevilla and Olympique Lyon, the Hammers have reached a European semifinal only for the third time in their history, and they will qualify for Europe via their Premier League position for the second year running. But as this year also marks the tenth anniversary of the latest final West Ham have played in, the 2012 Championship play-off final at Wembley, I’d like to take a look back at this game: West Ham vs. Blackpool fighting for promotion to the Premier League on 19 May 2012. When it comes to my best West Ham experience, this match is one which stands out of the Hammers games I have been to.
After relegation in 2010/11, West Ham had vowed to fight for immediate promotion to the Premier League. But there was also a different kind of fight around the corner: shortly before West Ham set up the play-off final against Blackpool, my doctor had told me about his concerns and urged me to undergo some tests. However, I would not have thought that my first trip to New Wembley was going to be the last visit to a football ground for some time.
Being a long-time Hammers supporter, it was out of question that I had to try to get a ticket and be present in person when the club played at Wembley, regardless that a “footy trip“ on this date did not quite fit into the current situation and the diet plan I had to stick to. However, when I planned the trip, I didn’t know that my future health condition would keep me from travelling and attending large crowds for some time, and would make it impossible to use the tickets I had got for the Summer Olympics in London 2012.
Then, with a Wembley ticket from West Ham’s allocation in hand, I defied all objections and booked a flight. Different from other trips, I made this one all by myself and cut my stay short. As I had made up my mind on such a short notice, I even hadn’t been able to schedule any meet-up with London based friends before the match. However, with all the pubs close to the stadium being completely overcrowded, we would hardly have found each other there anyway.
Therefore I skipped the pre-match drink, and quite early found myself passing the huge statue of Bobby Moore in front of the stadium. Of course the great man wore a West Ham scarf as did the majority of supporters. Then into the stadium and up to the stands – surprisingly with an escalator, reminding me of my arrival at Heathrow earlier that day!
Before the kick-off, when “God Save the Queen” was played, everyone got up from their seats and here, in the “West Ham End” behind the goal, nobody folded them back down again, cheering on the team in claret and blue every minute of the match.
And we really had something to cheer about in the first half: West Ham took the lead, thanks to Carlton Cole, one of the players who had stayed with the club despite relegation. But then, almost immediately after the break, Blackpool was level. Now it was a typical “cup game“ with a lot of end-to-end stuff and chances for both sides.
In the 80th minute Kevin Nolan tried a spectacular one touch shot, but it only rattled the crossbar in front of the West Ham supporters. However, only three minutes later redemption for the “claret and blue army” was near: again Nolan was involved, with the West Ham skipper receiving the ball on the left of Blackpool’s half and crossing it into the box where Carlton Cole got his boot on the ball. However, he could not direct a shot on goal due to a joint intervention of Blackpool‘s keeper and a defender. But out of this scramble in the five yard box the ball rolled to Ricardo Vaz Te who finally hammered it into the net from close range to make it 2-1. With this result West Ham were back to the Premier League and the cheers almost lifted the roof off Wembley Stadium.
What a joy that was, making me forget all the doubts around the trip and the upcoming medical tests. It was so good to celebrate this victory and to sing with all the Irons around me, regardless of not knowing anyone of them. 
However, watching the play-off trophy being lifted by the players and again and again singing “Bubbles“ and other songs together with all the West Ham faithful, while the squad was celebrating on the pitch, wasn’t the end of this story…
When I got onto the tube on the way back from Wembley I suddenly bumped into my mate Sam. What a coincidence and what a joy to meet one of my oldest friends in London among tens of thousands of fans, without having made any appointment!
However, I believe there’s nothing to happen entirely by chance, God makes everything work together for those who know and love him. Learning about the extent of my illness when I had got home, the things that had happened on that Saturday afternoon at Wembley – having been able to celebrate West Ham’s victory before my personal “match of a lifetime” was about to begin, and meeting up with a special friend, entirely by chance – became a sign for me that I could start my own fight with confidence and optimism.
It was the help of my doctors, the support and love of my family, as well as the lasting joy of this West Ham experience at Wembley, and my faith that God meant well for me, which made another victory possible. Not only West Ham had won its most important match of 2012; by the end of the year, I knew that I had only missed the Olympic Games, and would be able to cheer on the Hammers in London once again.
And that’s what I‘m doing to this day. Come on you Irons!

0:2, 1:3, 5:3 !!!
Österreichs Eishockeyteam hat gestern – wie am Sonntag MADCHESTER CITY im letzten Premier League-Spiel – tolle Moral bewiesen: In dem über den Abstieg aus der A-WM 2022 entscheidenden Spiel gegen Großbritannien gingen die ersten beiden Drittel mit jeweils 0:1 an die Briten, aber dann drehten die Österreicher trotz 0:2 das Spiel!
Im letzten Drittel drehten die Österreicher die Partie, obwohl auf den Anschlusstreffer zum 1:2 sogar noch ein britisches Tor folgte. Das 1:3 konnte die Eishockey-Cracks aus Österreich nicht demoralisieren, sie zeigten große Resilienz und holten mit vier weiteren Toren schließlich einen 5:3-Sieg!
Das ist wie Manchester City im „Endspiel“ der Premier League am Sonntag, nur noch besser: sogar zweimal wurde bei diesem Eishockeymatch ein 2-Tore-Rückstand aufgeholt – tolle Moral sichert den Klassenerhalt! Österreich beendete damit seine WM-Gruppe zumindest auf Platz 7 und spielt auch 2023 bei der A-WM.

Incredible and partly Disappointing Finish…
….of a brilliant season. David Moyes’ side must settle for Europa Conference League after a 1-3 defeat at West Ham’s bogey team Brighton, but in a nerve-wrecking finish to the season Manchester City score three goals within the “Rapid Viertelstunde” to beat Aston Villa 3-2, coming from 0-2 down, and win the Premier League title only one point ahead of Liverpool! They now call it the “Five minute miracle” (The Telegraph).

Michail Antonio’s blistering strike lit up the game only for a rare goal from Joel Veltman to level matters.
Pascal Gross flashed a shot past Lukasz Fabianski and Danny Welbeck headed home a third in stoppage time.
The win sealed an impressive top-half finish for Brighton after a record-breaking season on the south coast.
For West Ham, the 56th game of their gruelling season was a step too far but at least they can look forward to another European adventure next year.
Bye-bye Lawro, Welcome Back Sunderland!
BBC football pundit Mark Lawrenson will retire this weekend after more than twenty years of “Lawro’s Predictions” and loads of wrong results.
Especially West Ham had a lot to complain about Lawro’s predictions:
In January of the 2015-16 campaign, the Hammers were lying sixth in the Premier League but in Lawro’s League Table – which is at the bottom of every predictions page, and is based on his results, not reality – they were 19th with just two wins all season. It didn’t go down well at Upton Park…
The former Liverpool defender who also won 39 caps for Ireland didn’t really mind that many of his predictions did not materialise. When confronted by a fan who criticised him for false results, he answered:
“I said ‘OK, fair enough, but do you know what… if I honestly thought I could accurately predict the results of football matches, I wouldn’t be here, freezing my backside off. I would be in Barbados, in Sandy Lane hotel.”
This week’s predictions would see Manchester City win the League, Tottenham remain in fourth place, Manchester United win and West Ham draw, and Leeds get relegated.
Let’s hope that he will have got West Ham’s result wrong once again like he has done many times:

Finally, after six long years, Sunderland‘s fans have something to cheer. Consecutive relegations saw the club fall from England’s top tier to the third in just a year, and that is where they have remained until this year.

Elfmeter vergeben…
…und Spiel verloren. Zuletzt kommt das relativ häufig vor, weil fast alle Finalspiele im Elfmeterschießen entschieden werden: in den letzten acht Tagen waren es drei Cupfinali, die 1:1 n.V. endeten, sodass ein penalty shoot-out entscheiden musste – Liverpool-Chelsea (FA Cup), Eintracht-Rangers (Europa League) und RB Leipzig-Freiburg (DFB Pokal; Gewinner jeweils fettgedruckt).
Das schottische Cup-Finale endete dagegen nicht 1:1, sondern stand 0:0 nach 90 Minuten. Doch dann schossen die Glasgow Rangers in der extra time zwei Tore und holten den heimischen Pokal, nachdem sie am Mittwoch den Europa League-Pokal durch den von Routinier Aaron Ramsey vergebenen Elfer der Frankfurter Eintracht hatten überlassen müssen.
Eine monumentale Leistung der Rangers, zum vierten Mal in 11 Spielen über 120 Minuten zu gehen und zu gewinnen. Unglaublich, vor allem, wenn man bedenkt, wie viel mentalen und physischen Tribut die Niederlage im Elfmeterschießen am Mittwochabend gefordert haben muss!
Anlässlich der vielen Elfmeter in den letzten Tagen musste ich immer wieder mal an den allerersten vergebenen Elfmeter zurückdenken, an den ich mich erinnern kann: Der stets etwas übergewichtige und deshalb “Buffi” genannte Hans Ettmayer trat beim Stand von 1:2 für Italien im EM-Qualifikationsspiel im Oktober 1970 gegen den damaligen Vize-Weltmeister Italien kurz vor dem Schlusspfiff zum Strafstoß für Österreich an und …. vergab!

Und dieses skurrile italienische Video beweist, dass meine Erinnerung nicht ganz korrekt war: ich hatte nämlich gedacht, Pechvogel Buffi Ettmayer (30 Länderspiele ohne Tor) hätte den Ball bei diesem Flutlichtspiel in den Wiener Nachthimmel gejagt. Tatsächlich hatte Albertosi im Tor der Italiener den Schuss des damaligen Wacker-Innsbruck-Spielers und späteren VfB-Stuttgart-Legionärs gehalten. 
Wie dem auch sei: vergebene Elfer können ganz schön wehtun – egal ob sie nun vom Keeper gehalten werden oder an die Latte, die Stange oder ganz daneben gehen…
Europäische „Parallelaktion“ oder nicht?
Ein aufregender letzter Spieltag in der Premier League mit vier Entscheidungen steht am Sonntag ab 17 Uhr (MESZ) bevor. In Österreich ist die spannende letzte Runde, die über Abstieg und Europacup-Quali entschied (der Meister stand wie immer längst fest), am Freitag und Samstag gespielt worden. Für den SK Rapid gibt’s aber noch eine Verlängerung der Saison, während die Hammers ab Sonntag Abend jedenfalls auf Urlaub fahren können – hoffentlich mit dem Ticket für die Europa League in der Tasche!
Vor zwei Wochen hatten sich weder der SK Rapid noch West Ham Utd einen Europacup-Platz gesichert. Der SK Rapid war seit vier Wochen sieglos (eine Niederlage und drei Unentschieden, zuletzt das vierte Derby-1:1 in dieser Saison gegen die Austria) und die Grün-Weißen hatten den eine UEFA-Gruppenphase garantierenden 3. Platz in der Bundesliga-Tabelle verloren.
Auch West Ham hatte in der Premier League vier Mal hintereinander nicht gewonnen (drei Niederlagen, ein Remis) und den sechsten Platz nicht behaupten können. Aber die Hammers waren nach dem verlorenen EL-Semifinale in Frankfurt mit einem 4:0-Sieg in Norwich wieder in die Erfolgsspur zurückgekehrt.
Parallelaktion
Und nun ging es für Rapid und West Ham in den letzten beiden Runden in einer typischen „Parallelaktion“ zuerst gegen den Tabellenführer und dann zu einem Match in den Süden: ins Kärntner Wolfsburg respektive nach Brighton.
West Ham und Rapid lieferten den höher einzuschätzenden Gegnern am letzen Sonntag jeweils einen harten Fight, aber nur West Ham holte mit dem 2:2 bei Mark Noble‘s farewell, bei dem wir live dabei waren, einen wichtigen Punkt und sicherte sich damit Platz 7, was immerhin fix einen Platz in der Conference League bedeutet. Rapid verlor dagegen zu Hause am selben Tag gegen RB Salzburg 0:1.
Und nun wird’s grimmig für Rapid: Mit dem enttäuschenden 1:2 gegen den WAC am Samstag, dem letzten Spieltag in der österreichischen Bundesliga, müssen die Grün-Weißen nun ins österreichische Europacup-Play-Off gegen den Sieger aus Wattens gegen LASK. Dabei hatten die Grünen in Kärnten in der ersten Halbzeit durch einen Treffer von Grüll geführt, kassierten dann aber in 90 Sekunden der zweiten Hälfte zwei Gegentreffer und konnten nicht mehr ausgleichen.
Sollte Rapid im Play-off auf den LASK treffen, so wird das ein brisantes Duell: Die Linzer werden seit Kurzem vom Ex-Rapid-Manager Didi Kühbauer trainiert. Der würde den Hütteldorfern sicher allzu gerne ein Bein stellen und die heuer enttäuschenden Athletiker doch noch in die Conference League bringen.
Sieg gegen das “bogey team” Brighton nötig
West Ham ist dagegen nach dem tollen Unentschieden gegen Man City schon seit letztem Sonntag für diesen dritten Europacup-Bewerb qualifiziert. Aber mit einem Sieg gegen Hove & Albion in Brighton bei gleichzeitigem Unentschieden oder einer Niederlage von Manchester Utd bei Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace würden sich die Hammers noch in die Europa League katapultieren!
Gegen Brighton mehr als einen Punkt zu holen, das ist allerdings a huge task: Der letzte Sieg gegen die Seagulls liegt nämlich zehn Jahre zurück – und seit die Blau-Weißen in der Premier League spielen (2017/18), ist West Ham noch kein einziger Sieg gegen sie gelungen. Statistisch gesehen ist ein Unentschieden gegen dieses bogey team am wahrscheinlichsten, da die letzten sechs Partien gegen Brighton unentschieden endeten, nachdem die drei ersten Premier League-Begegnungen für West Ham sogar verloren gingen.
Diese unheimliche Serie der Eastenders im Süden muss also beendet werden, wenn man überhaupt eine Chance haben möchte, und dann muss Man Utd ebenfalls im Süden – allerdings von London, nämlich im Stadtteil Crystal Palace – noch Punkte abgeben! “Come on you Irons!“, “Come on you Eagles!”
Jaja, nachdem die “Adler“ zuletzt ein verhasster Gegner im EL-Semifinale waren, muss man dem selben Tier, das auch die Eagles aus dem Süden Londons im Vereinswappen führen, bei den Hammers nun die Daumen halten. Mit einem Sieg könnte das derzeit auf Platz 13 liegende Crystal Palace noch den Zehnten Brighton überholen und allenfalls sogar noch ein top ten finish schaffen, wenn Brentford und Newcastle ihre Duelle gegen die Abstiegskandidaten Leeds bzw Burnley nicht gewinnen sollten. Jeder Rang, den ein Klub in der Tabelle höher steigt, ist immerhin geschätzte £3m wert!
Europa League oder Conference League?
Meine beiden Klubs könnten also auch nächste Saison wieder im selben Europacup-Bewerb spielen: doch während die Conference League für West Ham schon fix ist und man mit einem Sieg im letzten Spiel noch die Chance hat, eine Liga höher in Europa zu starten, müssen die Rapid-Kicker nun ihren Urlaub verschieben und nächste Woche noch zwei Matches gegen den Sieger aus Wattens gegen LASK bestreiten, um zumindest noch in die Conference League zu kommen.
Die Paarungen der Hammers und der Rapidler in den letzten beiden Runden waren also wieder einmal eine typische „Parallelaktion“, die Resultate sind es aber nicht! Rapid hätte ein Unentschieden in Wolfsberg genügt, um ohne Play-off in die Conference League zu kommen – es gelang nicht… West Ham braucht jedenfalls einen Sieg.
Am Sonntag wird es in der Premier League an allen Fronten spannend: an der Spitze muss Manchester City gewinnen, um den Meistertitel sicher zu haben, Tottenham und Arsenal matchen sich noch um die Champions League und Leeds und Burnley kämpfen noch gegen den Abstieg.
Das sind die Spiele, in denen sich dies alles am Sonntag entscheiden wird:

Two West Ham Players in EL Team of the Season
Craig Dawson and Declan Rice have been nominated as two of the best eleven players of this term’s Europa League season. Very much deserved!
Two Austrian players, Konrad Laimer (RB Leipzig) and defender Martin Hinteregger (Eintracht Frankfurt) have also been included in the “UEFA Europa League Team of the Season” – the latter along with his teammates Trapp, Borré and “Player of the Season”, Filip Kostić.
