… to go. It’s getting closer. Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out, and then the night of the European semifinal game will have come: West Ham host Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday this week.
It’s not the first time the Hammers and the Germans meet in a European semifinal. In 1976 West Ham played Eintracht Frankfurt in the penultimate round of the Cupwinners’ Cup, and overcoming a one goal deficit from their 1-2 defeat in Frankfurt, the Irons managed to play the West Ham Way on a desperate pitch at Upton Park: “Under the given conditions it is remarkable just how much skill, one touch football and sublime finishing characterised the evening,” football writer Tim Crane says about a night which for everyone who was there sits above the rest for the sheer entertainment and high octane excitement at the Boleyn Ground.
In a pitch awash with puddles and mud, a header, a left-foot and a right-foot brought West Ham a place in a European final against Anderlecht. Here are some pictures, published by The West Ham Years:
