West Ham 4 Ipswich 1

First home win of the Lopetegui era. A quick goal for West Ham within the first minute of the game (Michail Antonio) calmed the nerves on this sunny afternoon, but it wouldn’t be West Ham if Ipswich had not been level only some minutes later.

But West Ham really played well this afternoon, and their direct, attack-minded play and also the experience of their players paid dividends against a newly promoted Ipswich side in the second half. Three more goals by Jarrod Bowen, Mohamed Kudus, and Lucas Paqueta gave West Ham their well-deserved first win at the London Stadium this season.

Jarred Bowen who had been left out of the England squad for the upcoming Nations League games gave England manager Lee Carsley the right kind of answer and put in a Man of the Match performance for West Ham with a goal and two assists.

The Hammers climbed a good way up the table and sit now in 12th with eight points. They will play Tottenham after the international break and even could leapfrog their London rivals with an away win at Tottenham’s ground. Spurs beat Manchester Utd 3-0 at Old Trafford a week ago, but last weekend they were 2-0 in front at Brighton and eventually lost 2-3. Looks like quite a “spursy” season for them so far.

After the trip to north London, the Hammers’ opponents will be Manchester United in three weeks’ time. If Erik ten Hag will still be at the helm when the Red Devils come to London Stadium remains to be seen. Unlike him, Julen Lopetegui’s job seems to be safe for now.
