Lucky win vs. Man Utd

With Mohammed Kudus suspended after his red card in the last game, West Ham manager Lopetegui handed the first start of the season to Carlos Soler in a very important game against the Red Devils. Having got only two wins from eight matches so far, West Ham‘s Spanish manager whose team had been battered 1-4 at Tottenham last weekend, was under serious pressure.
The first half did not bring any relief from this unpleasant situation because Manchester Utd completely dominated West Ham and the Hammers were all but lucky not to be at least two goals down at the break with the score still 0-0.
Soler and Paqueta were subbed at the interval and Soucek and Summerville came on. And with them West Ham made a really bright start into the second half, playing with much more power and urgency than before the break. And as woeful as West Ham had been for 45 minutes, their head coach got the substitutions right and managed to make his side look competitive again.
In the 74th minute Danny Ings, an other substitute who had been introduced for Michail Antonio later in the second half, was passed the ball in the box by the tireless club captain Jarrod Bowen, and his attempted shot rolled towards Crysencio Summerville at the back post.

Summerville slided into the ball, and his first strike in Claret and Blue made it 1-0 with around 15 minutes left. Our No7 took off his shirt and ran straight to Mohammed Kudus to celebrate with him.
However the lead didn’t last long with Manchester Utd getting level from a corner headed into the goal by Casemiro. And West Ham needed luck again to win the game:
In the 88th minute a lengthy VAR check took place after a possible foul on Danny Ings in the box. The controversial decision was in favour of the Hammers, and with 92 minutes on the clock Jarrod Bowen made no mistake from the spot and it was West Ham 2 Man Utd. 1.
The game eventually lasted until the 104th minute, but Man Utd. couldn’t score an equaliser, and West Ham got their third win of the season and leapfrogged Manchester Utd. in the table. This downfall to 14th in the Premier League table led to the sacking of Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag on the following Monday.

Asked about the penalty decision, West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui said: “I didn’t see it. The players say it’s a penalty and the referee says it is a penalty, so I am sure they are right.
“I prefer to highlight that, after they scored, we keep the energy and positive momentum to win the match. I prefer to keep that energy.”

Goalscorer Crysencio Summerville was deservedly announced as official Man of the Match. He made a brilliant impact off the bench as did Danny Ings who was involved in both Hammers‘ goals. By the way, German striker Niclas Füllkrug is still out with achilles problems.

Next game for West Ham is away at Nottingham Forest for which James Ward-Prowse is playing this season. It will be a 3 p.m. kick-off on Saturday and will be the Hammers‘ first Premier League game away from London this season… After a lucky win not everything is okay at West Ham, but what else shall we do than cheer on the team in Claret and Blue:
“Come on you Irons!”
