What a night!
West Ham 2 Sevilla 0 after extra time (agg. 2-1)
Tomas Soucek and Andriy Yarmolenko’s winning goal send Hammers into Europa League quarter-finals
From The Telegraph: Not since the summer Olympics of 2012 has Stratford sounded anything like this, and certainly not since West Ham United first called the London Stadium their home. In the moments following Andriy Yarmolenko’s winning goal, this arena felt at last like a fortress, a footballing bearpit, and a place no opposing team will want to visit.
One of the great nights in the modern history of West Ham ended with their players dancing on the pitch, Declan Rice embarking on a lap of honour and Mark Noble with tears forming in his eyes. It was that sort of occasion for this club, a gift from David Moyes and his players to 60,000 breathless spectators.
The game went into extra time, and penalties loomed. But in the 112th minute Pablo Fornals found the energy to stride forward, cut inside and shoot towards goal. His strike was cleared only as far as Yarmolenko. And of course it was him, striking again when he was needed most. The Ukraine international scored at the weekend and he did so again here, despite all of the turmoil he and his countrymen are facing, and all of the unimaginable personal struggles he must be enduring within his own mind. Andryi stayed calm when others would have lost their heads, on a night that will live long in the memory of this club and its delirious fans.
“Unbelievable,” said Michail Antonio. “A dream come true. I have been here seven years and the only atmosphere close to this was the last day at the Boleyn Ground. The fans roared all the way through, backing us. I will give the win to them, they were the ones who did it for us.”
There will not be a team in the Europa League that would like to face this West Ham side in the quarter-finals. They are strong, aggressive and intense, with more than a hint of technical quality to go with it. Ask any fan who they want next, and they will tell you that they simply do not care.
“I’ll take anyone,” said a beaming Rice. “We can go anywhere and get a result. Teams coming here know they are in for a game.”

Irons oder Armada?
1588 segelte die spanische Armada unter Alonso Herzog von Medina-Sidonia, dem Statthalter von Andalusien, gegen England. Doch nicht die stolzen Spanier gewannen die Seeschlacht um England – die englische Kriegsflotte unter Earl Charles Howard und Vize-Admiral Sir Francis Drake schlug die spanische Armada vernichtend! Die Invasion Englands misslang.
In dieser Europacup-Saison ist auch eine spanische Armada in den UEFA-Bewerben auf einer bisher sehr erfolgreichen Reise.
Sechs spanische Klubs sind in die Achtelfinali von Champions League und Europa League gekommen. In der Champions League sind Villareal, Atlético Madrid – gestern gegen Manchester Utd mit einem Auswärtssieg auf der Insel – und Real Madrid – trotz Niederlage im ersten und Rückstand im zweiten Spiel gegen PSG! – nun schon eine Runde weiter im Viertelfinale.
In der Europa League wollen es ihnen heute Abend der FC Barcelona, Betis Sevilla und FC Sevilla, sechsfacher Gewinner der Europa League, gleichtun. Aber da haben Galatasaray, Eintracht Frankfurt und der letzte englische Vertreter in der Europa League, West Ham United, etwas dagegen!
Sevilla fährt mit einem 1:0-Vorsprung ins London Stadium zu West Ham United. Bei dieser Europa League-Partie hoffen wir auf „massive West Ham“ und dass der FC Sevilla wie einst der Kommandant der spanischen Armada, der Herzog von Medina Sidonia, geschlagen in die andalusische Heimat zurückkehrt.
Dazu muss West Ham im London Stadium das 0:1 aus dem Hinspiel aufholen und nicht wie das „United“ aus Manchester verlieren. Auch ein Remis wäre „not enough“, um eine Runde weiterzukommen. Ein Sieg mit zwei Toren Unterschied muss her! Nur dann kann die Reise zum Europa League-Finale, das heuer just in Sevilla stattfindet, für die Hammers weitergehen.
