3-1 win at Everton

Penalty save and coming from behind – West Ham defeat the Toffees against the odds!

Two weeks on from seeing a ‘Moyes out’ banner amongst his own supporters, David Moyes and his boys respond with back-to-back wins. The Hammers have now surpassed their points total of last season after 27 of 38 games played.

Tomas Soucek struck a stylish half-volley as West Ham scored twice in injury time to clinch a dramatic win at Everton.

The Blues had taken the lead when Beto – who had seen a first-half penalty saved – headed in at the back post shortly after half-time.

Kurt Zouma equalised for the Hammers with a header from a corner (62‘).

The game looked set to end in a draw but Soucek scored a stunning goal with his instep in added time before Edson Alvarez struck right at the end.

An insane goal scored by Tomas Soucek

Soucek’s goal was a moment to savour and was akin to something Hammers legend Paolo di Canio might have produced at his peak: Mohamed Kudus swung a high cross-field pass into the right corner of the box where the Czech midfielder deftly controlled the ball before striking a swerving shot with his instep, which flew into the corner of the net beyond Jordan Pickford.

On the other side of the pitch also West Ham’s goal keeper Alphonse Areola was instrumental in the Hammers’ away win: his performance this afternoon was the highest rated by a goalkeeper in the Premier League this season (9.74). 🔒

The Odds for EVE v WHU

Having read the following preview on the BBC website I suggest to make a bet on the “Toffees” winning this afternoon‘s game against West Ham:

Will the “Toffees” win for the first time since mid of December last year?

Everton “are winless in nine Premier League games since beating Burnley 2-0 on 16 December. It is Everton’s second-longest winless streak in the competition after a run of 12 matches between August and October 1994, which was ended by a 1-0 home victory versus West Ham.”

It has been an old habit of West Ham to gift opponents being on a long winless run an escape from this streak. Thirty years ago that happened at Everton: the blue side of Liverpool did break the duck against the Hammers, and I very much fear that this could happen again today if the Hammers play their usual game of “Moyesball” this afternoon.

Though in last Monday’s game West Ham acted quite differently from their familiar tactics under Moyes. Instead of his usual cautious approach the manager let the team start into the home game against Brentford attacking and pushing for a quick opening goal. Coming out of the blocks like that paid dividends and West Ham were 2-0 up after just 7 minutes, and they eventually won 4-2, ending their own winless run of eight games in 2024.

But this afternoon, playing away, I am pretty sure that David Moyes will let his team sit back again and hope that they will score on the counter attack. The West Ham faithful will again be dissatisfied with this negative approach, and the “Moyes out brigade” will raise their voice once more.

Even with a win it’s not sure if Moyes‘s critics could be silenced. Well, let’s see what happens and keep the fingers crossed anyway!

Come on you Irons! We‘re West Ham‘s claret and blue army!
