Euro Fixtures Round of 16
The games are starting on Saturday with Switzerland vs. Italy (Berlin) and Germany vs. Denmark (Dortmund).
England will play Slovakia on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen and Austria vs. Turkey will be the final match on Tuesday in Berlin.
It‘s so Cordoba!
Es könnte sein, dass nach diesem 3:2 Sieg – dem ersten vollen Erfolg in einem Pflichtspiel gegen die Holländer seit 40 Jahren – bald niemand mehr von Córdoba 1978 spricht. Denn dieser Erfolg ist vielleicht sogar über das legendäre 3:2 von der WM in Argentinien zu stellen, da Österreich damit den ersten Gruppenplatz erreichte und das in der mit Frankreich, Niederlande und Polen sehr stark besetzten Gruppe D der EM 2024. Zwei Mal in Führung zu gehen, zweimal den Ausgleich zu kassieren und sich dann wieder zu motivieren und neuerlich zu treffen, mit wunderbaren Spielzügen und tollem Einsatz – das ist einfach großartig! Und dazu die Superstimmung in Berlin im Olympiastadion. The sky is the limit, könnte man nun sagen. Mir genügt eine Reminiszenz an ein Lied von André Heller: “Jetzt bin i ka Lilliputaner mehr, und i wachs, i wachs…”
Wie weit das Wachstum des österreichischen Teams bei diesem Turnier noch gehen wird, wird man sehen. Die EM dauert bis 14. Juli.

It’s really good patient play down the left-hand side. Florian Grillitsch sends in a brilliant cross from close to the by-line and Romano Schmid advances with a diving header.
The Netherlands were ahead for all of 12 minutes.
The Austria fans are all on their feet waving scarves, shirts and flags as they continue to celebrate their second goal, and applaud the players going off.
The Dutch fans are also stood up, but were whistling loudly to show their disapproval at how long those Austrian substitutions took.

Austria are a well balanced team with a good work ethic and well coached – a pleasure to watch.
They fully deserved the points, they deserved to get the result because of the work they have put into that game.
Outstanding from Austria. To the Netherlands’ credit, they did twice fight back to level but Austria’s never-say-die attitude got them a well-earned win.
They are going to cause someone problems whoever they face in the knockouts.
Man of the match: Marcel Sabitzer
Thomas Hitzlsperger: There is a great bond between the Austrian team and the manager. Ralf Rangnick was offered the Bayern Munich job and he turned it down.

Bis zur 98. Minute war es das Modric-Märchen. Doch niemand sonst kann Märchen so gewissenlos beenden wie die Italiener.
Italien tut so weh
Cristiano Ronaldo hat einmal gesagt: „Modric entscheidet, wie wir spielen.“ Toni Kroos sagte über seinen langjährigen Kompagnon, er spiele „wie in Zeitlupe“. Und weil Luka Modric schon immer alles entschieden hat, vor allem, wie schnell und wie langsam sich die Zeiger drehen, machte er sich gestern, mutmaßlich in seinem letzten großen Länderspiel, zum ältesten Torschützen der EM-Geschichte. Mit 38 Jahren und 239 Tagen. Und mit, wie Kommentator Oliver Schmidt sagte, „dem längsten Nachschuss der Fußballgeschichte“. 31 Sekunden nämlich lagen zwischen Modrics Fehlschuss aus elf Metern und seinem Tor zum 1:0, das den Kroaten in der 55. Minute das Achtelfinale beschert hätte. Es war die perfekte Geschichte. Die vom niemals Aufgebenden. Vom so gebrechlich dreinschauenden Mann, der nicht zum ersten Mal, aber jetzt im Greisenalter, sein ganzes Volk schulterte. Und der es wieder einmal schaffte, diesem Druck standzuhalten. Der so stark gewesen war, dass Modric nach seinem Treffer ein bisschen weinen musste. Er sollte auch die märchenhafte Storyline von der alten Garde weiterstricken, die bei diesem Turnier groß aufspielt. N’Golo Kanté, Toni Kroos, Kevin de Bruyne. Jetzt Luka Modric. Ein Märchen. Das längst nicht auserzählt ist. Doch weiß die Welt spätestens seit 2006, dass niemand im Weltfußball Märchen besser beenden, sie für Unfug, nicht wahr erklären kann als die Italiener. Mit allerletzter Lebenskraft nahm sich der junge Innenverteidiger Riccardo Calafiori (Bologna) dem Ende der Geschichte an. Wie eins dieser sehr gut gefälschten Trikots, die es in Ligurien auf den Wochenmärkten für schmale Lira zu kaufen gab, gerierte er sich als Paolo-Maldini-Nachahmung und schritt in die gegnerische Hälfte, das braune Haar kollidierte mit dem Gegenwind. Doch Calafiori marschierte weiter. Sekunden vor Abpfiff und endlich am Strafraum angelangt, legte er den Ball auf den von links mitgelaufenen Mattia Zaccagni. Noch so ein Name, den vor dem Turnier höchstens die Panini-Sammler gekannt haben. Doch auch dem Lazio-Stürmer gelang ein Erinnerungsstück: Wie Alessandro Del Piero 2006 gegen Jens Lehmann schlenzte Zaccagni den Ball am kroatischen Keeper Dominik Livakovic vorbei ins Kreuzeck. Sofort danach war Schluss.
Luka Modric, der an niemanden erinnern muss, weil er selbst der Größte seines Landes ist, weinte wieder. Diesmal vor Trauer. In Kroatien wollte man so lange von einer Goldene Generation sprechen, wie Modric noch dabei ist. England muss nun 3:0 gegen Slowenien gewinnen, damit Kroatien noch das Achtelfinale erreicht. Bei den bisherigen Leistungen der Engländer würde das schon an ein Märchen grenzen
Copa América ‘24 🎶 ✝️ ⚽️
Die amerikanische Kontinentalmeisterschaft Copa América wurde am 20. Juni in Atlanta mit einer Zeremonie eröffnet, die nicht nur ein Musikprogramm, sondern auch ein Gebet 🙏🏻 beinhaltete. Emilio Agüero Esgaib, ein bekannter Pastor aus Paraguay, sprach das Gebet. Er ist Gründer und leitender Pastor der Kirche Más Que Vencedores in Asunción, Paraguay. Dass das Turnier mit einem Gebet (in spanischer Sprache und englischer Übersetzung) eröffnet wurde, führte klarerweise sofort zu Kontroversen. Ich finde, es war eine starke christliche Botschaft:
“The message of Christ is still relevant for today, and He called us to peace, understanding and forgiveness. He also said, ‘Believe, because everything is possible for those who believe’. These words encourage us not to lose hope, to believe for great things, to believe that everything is possible. God bless all the nations of the American Continent, each team and each athlete, all the supporters, the authorities and the whole continental family, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen!”
Das folgende Eröffnungsspiel von Titelverteidiger Argentinien gegen Kanada gewannen die Albi Celeste 2:0.
Die Südamerika-Meisterschaft ist heuer eine um sechs Teams aus Nord- und Mittelamerika (Kanada, Mexiko, Jamaika, USA, Panama und Costa Rica) auf 16 Nationalmannschaften erweiterte Amerika-Meisterschaft geworden, bei der in vier Gruppen gespielt wird. Die Copa wird in den USA ausgetragen.
Die erst- und zweitplatzierten Teams bestreiten ab 4. Juli das Viertelfinale. Nach dem Halbfinale am 9. und 10. Juli findet das Finale am 14. Juli in Miami statt.

Two months to go: PL Fixture List Released
West Ham United will not play a Premier League game outside London for the first three months of the 2024-25 campaign.
A quirk of the Premier League fixture list means West Ham’s new manager, Julen Lopetegui, will not need to make overnight travel plans until his side visit Nottingham Forest on Nov 2.
Instead the Spanish manager and his first new signing, 18-year-old Brazilian starlet Luis Guilherme, will be quickly acquainted with the passion of London derbies. West Ham’s first four away games involve trips to Crystal Palace, Fulham, Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur. Lopetegui starts at home to Aston Villa and faces four more home games before heading to Forest.
The Hammers‘ final game of the season will be away at newly promoted Ipswich Town on 25 May 2025. Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich achieved back-to-back promotions, becoming the fifth team to do so, and were promoted as runners-up of the Championship to end their 22-year absence from the top tier. Their relegation had come one year after a very successful 2000/01 season finishing fifth, earning their manager George Burley the Manager of the Year award. The “Tractor Boys” were relegated from the Premier League in 2002 alongside Leicester and Derby County. Bizarrely, despite their relegation, Ipswich’s disciplinary record this season was the best of the teams that hadn’t qualified for European competition via league position, thus giving them a second successive UEFA Cup campaign for the following season after England received one of the three additional slots awarded through the UEFA Fair Play ranking.
In that season Arsenal made history by accomplishing their third double, their second under the reign of Arsène Wenger, and West Ham finished seventh under their then manager Glenn Roeder in 2001/02.
However, the next season also ended with relegation for West Ham, when Roeder was diagnosed with a brain tumour in April 2002 and West Ham’s 42 points from a 38-game season, a record for a relegated team, weren’t enough to save the Hammers (who were coached by caretaker manager Trevor Brooking for the final games of the season). But West Ham’s absence from the top flight didn’t last as long as Ipswich’s: the Irons were promoted to the Premier League after two years, winning the 2005 play-off final against Preston North End with manager Alan Pardew at the helm, courtesy to a Bobby Zamora strike. After ensuring promotion, Pardew said, “It’s a team effort. We defended well and we’re back where we belong.”
