Frust für Grün-weiß
Am Mittwoch verlor das in grün-weiß gestreiften Dressen spielende Betis Sevilla das Finale der Conference League gegen den FC Chelsea 1:4.
Am Donnerstag unterlag der SK Rapid dem LASK in Linz mit 1:3 (1:1). Im Rückspiel muss man nun mit drei Toren Unterschied gewinnen, um sich noch für die Conference League in der nächsten Saison zu qualifizieren. Das dritte Gegentor viel in der Nachspielzeit der zweiten Hälfte.
Für Rapid, das nach der Entlassung von Robert Klausz seit Ende April interimistisch von Stefan Kulovits betreut wird, ist die Ausgangslage vor dem Rückspiel am Sonntag nun sehr schwierig geworden. Eine Leistung wie beim 3:1-Sieg gegen Meister Sturm Graz (18. Mai; Bild unten) und noch ein Tor mehr ist gefordert! Trainer Kulovits versuchte nach der Niederlage gegen LASK optimistisch zu bleiben und sagte, dass in „St. Hanappi viel möglich ist!“ Das frühere Weststadion, „St. Hanappi“ genannt, wurde allerdings vor elf Jahren abgerissen.
Der neu bestellte Cheftrainer Peter Stöger wird also möglicherweise die erste der beiden Saisons, für die sein Vertrag abgeschlossen wurde, ohne Teilnahme an einem Europacupbewerb bestreiten müssen.
Wirklich zwei frustrierende Tage für die grün-weißen Farben und die Anhänger von Rapid und Betis.
Übrigens hat auch das grün-weiße Celtic Glasgow vergangenen Samstag ein wichtiges Spiel, das schottische Cupfinale, verloren: nach 1:1 n.V. gewann Aberdeen das Elferschießen mit 4:3. Celtic wurde allerdings heuer wieder – wie von 2011/12 bis 2019/20 und seit 2021/22 jede Saison – schottischer Meister vor den Glasgow Rangers.
Chelsea Take Five
Tonight Chelsea won the UEFA Conference League final with a 4-1 (0-1) victory over Manuel Pellegrini’s, Adrián‘s and Pablo Fornals’ Real Betis in Wrocław, Poland. Now the Blues are the first and only club to win all five major UEFA and FIFA club competitions.
This will make all Chelsea fans proud, and next time when a Chelsea game is shown at Barrie’s pub “The Tube Station”, it will be even more difficult to explain to them why I am supporting West Ham – and not Chelsea! However, the Hammers have already won the Conference League in 2023, being the first English club to win this new European competition!

Dons earn promotion
A superb strike by Myles Hippolyte was enough to secure Wembley victory for Wimbledon – and a fully deserved promotion to League One.
Hippolyte’s cracker in first-half injury time was a fitting way to secure glory at the famous venue and Wimbledon are back in the third tier of English football for the first time since 2022.
Johnnie Jackson’s men were simply the better team on the day, excellent in all departments, and promotion rewarded all the hard work put in by management, players, and staff in the last nine months.
Of course, the Dons’ fantastic supporters played their part once again, singing their hearts out for the lads – 28,500 of them packing into Wembley.
Premier League final day
The final day of this Premier League campaign 2024/25 is behind us. Now the positions in the table cannot be reversed anymore and West Ham rank fourteenth after a final day 3-1 away win over already relegated Ipswich Town.
Once again Jarrod Bowen was West Ham’s best player. He finishes the season on 13 goals and eight assists, an impressive tally considering West Ham’s poor season.
In the end the Hammers have finished better than Manchester Utd and Tottenham which seems to be the most positive to say after a really disappointing season for West Ham.
BBC pundit Gary Lineker finally said goodbye to “Match of the Day” on Sunday and apologised to all fans that their team “always came last”…
Here’s the final table of 2024/25:
Aston Villa lost 0-2 to Manchester Utd on the final day and therefore was beaten by Newcastle on goal difference in the race for the Champions League. The Villans and FA Cup winner Crystal Palace will play in the Europa League.
Nottingham Forest was beaten 0-1 at home by Chelsea which now will play in the Champions League, whereas Forest will compete in the Conference League next season. League Cup winners Newcastle Utd would have qualified for the Conference League if they hadn’t secured a spot in the Champions League.
Despite their dismal league position also Spurs will play Champions League football following their 1-0 win over Manchester Utd in the final of the Europa League in Bilbao last week.
Play-off finals to start
The first of the English Football League play-off finals at Wembley (which will be played from today until Sunday, 1 June) is the Championship play-off final between Sheffield Utd and Sunderland (Saturday, 3:01 p.m.). The winner of this most important game will be promoted to the Premier League. Sunderland have not been in Premier League since 2017, Sheffield United was relegated last season.
The Wembley finals to follow next week are:

National League: Oldham v Southend, 1 June

Glasner and Eagles win FA Cup on a day… 🎶
…which brought yet another victory for Austria:
Austria’s operatic JJ took the win in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest with his soaring, emotional song “Wasted Love”. The 24-year-old who is a counter-tenor at the Vienna “Staatsoper” took the title with a tempestuous electro-ballad, a story of heartache.
No heartache at Wembley though: much contrary to West Ham in 2006, when an injury time goal by Stephen Gerrard frustrated the Hammers, this time the outsider which also was in front after the first half, could hold on to defeat Manchester City and win the FA Cup.
Due to Eberechi Eze‘s early goal (16′) and a sublime team performance Crystal Palace beat Manchester City to lift the FA Cup and win their first major trophy. Austrian manager Oliver Glasner who already had won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt had drawn up a perfect game plan and stunned Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City! Palace keeper Dean Henderson made numerous spectacular saves including a penalty (Omar Marmoush). This win came after the south Londoners’ worst start to a season in more than 30 years. However the chairman hold his nerve back in August and September 2024 when the team failed to register a win in eight games and so it came that Oliver Glasner remained being their manager and now the 50-year-old has steered Crystal Palace to victory and the club’s anthem “Glad all over” echoed around Wembley!

There are going to be more finals at Wembley with the upcoming playoffs to determine promotion to the Premier League and the English football leagues, including Wimbledon v Walsall on Monday next week (26 May, 3 p.m.).

35 years old left back Aaron Cresswell is going to leave the club after eleven years at West Ham when his contract expires in June.
Cresswell, born in December 1989 in Liverpool, started his footballing career at Tranmere Rovers where he made his first-team debut in 2008 and made 70 league appearances for the club before signing for Ipswich Town in 2011. He made 138 appearances for Ipswich scoring six goals, before joining West Ham United in July 2014. He made 310 league appearances for the Hammers and scored 10 league goals. His international debut for England took place in November 2016 in a friendly against Spain. Cresswell played three times for England.

Vor 40 Jahren…
…stand der SK Rapid im Europacup-Finale. Am 15. Mai 1985 spielten die Grün-Weißen in Rotterdam gegen Everton.
Mit einem Fan-Autobus fuhren wir damals wie 10.000 weitere Rapid-Anhänger von Wien nach Rotterdam. In der Stadt waren viele Everton-Fans mit ihren blau-weißen Schals und Kappen, die Stimmung war gut und voller Vorfreude auf das Finale im „de Kuip“-Stadion.
Bis zur Halbzeit stand es 0:0, in der 58. Minute musste Rapid dann aber doch das 0:1 hinnehmen, in der 62. Minute folgte der zweite Gegentreffer.
Kurz vor Schluss konnte Hans Krankl nach Zuspiel von Zlatko Kranjcar auf 1:2 verkürzen, bald nach diesem Tor lief aber Rapid in einen Konter. Das 1:3 in der 88. Minute entschied das Spiel endgültig und der Tabellenführer der englischen First Division und spätere Meister 1984/85 holte sich in dieser Saison auch den Triumph im Cup der Cupsieger!
Wenn aber Antonin Panenka fit gewesen und nicht bloß kurz vor der Rapid-Viertelstunde eingewechselt worden wäre, wer weiß, wie das Match dann ausgegangen wäre!

Zwei Wochen später kam es dann in der selben Saison im Brüsseler Heysel Stadion zu der von englischen Anhängern ausgelösten Massenpanik im Meistercup-Finale FC Liverpool – Juventus Turin, die 39 Todesopfer forderte und bei der Hunderte verletzt wurden. Daraufhin wurden die englischen Klubs auf unbestimmte Zeit von den europäischen Cupbewerben ausgeschlossen und Everton blieb die Teilnahme am Meistercup verwehrt, obwohl man nach 1985 auch noch 1987 die englische Meisterschaft gewann. Die Sperre der englischen Vereine dauerte fünf Jahre, Everton wurde seither nur noch einmal FA-Cupsieger (1995), einmal verloren die Toffees mit David Moyes als Manager das FA Cup-Finale: 2009 gegen Chelsea (1:2). Moyes gewann erst mit West Ham erstmals “silverware“ in der Conference League 2023. Seit Jänner 2025 trainiert er wieder Everton.
So bitter die Niederlage gegen Everton bei dem weitgehend friedlich verlaufenen Finale 1985 für den SK Rapid auch war, man konnte mit erhobenem Haupt zurück nach Wien fahren und wurde vom damaligen Bürgermeister Helmut Zilk am Rathausplatz geehrt: “Wir waren traurig, sind aber trotzdem stolz auf euch, weil ihr unseren Fußball würdig vertreten habt,“ sagte der Bürgermeister zu Rapids Trainer Otto Baric.
