Austrian West Ham supporters club “Austrian Irons” made their first joint trip of eleven fans coming over to London to watch the game vs. Tottenham and make a pitch side tour at London Stadium. By chance we popped into former Austrian national team and Rapid player Roman Wallner, revisited the area of the former Boleyn Ground at Upton Park and had a brilliant time on Saturday and Sunday. The game ended 1-1, West Ham were unable to surpass Spurs in the Premier League table, but the trip itself was a full success! Come on you Irons!

Wolfsberg ÖFB-Cupsieger

Das Team von Rapid-Legende Didi Kühbauer gewann durch ein Tor der kurz zuvor für Ballo eingewechselten Nummer 7, Angelo Gattermayer (77. Minute) den österreichischen Fußballcup.

WAC siegt 1:0 in Klagenfurt gegen TSV Hartberg

Für WAC-Coach Didi Kühbauer ist es der erste Titel als Trainer. “Wenn mir jemand gesagt hätte, dass ich den ersten Titel als Trainer mit dem WAC hole, dann hätte ich ihn einliefern lassen”, sagte der glückliche Erfolgstrainer.

Als Spieler wurde Kühbauer mit Rapid Wien österreichischer Meister 1996 und Cupsieger 1995 (Rapids letzter Cupsieg). 1996 stand Didi mit Rapid im Europacupfinale. 2006 kam er auch mit Mattersburg ins ÖFB-Cupfinale. Kühbauer ist Teil des Rapid Teams des Jahrhunderts. Von Oktober 2018 bis November 2021 war er Trainer des SK Rapid.

Nun hat der Burgenländer im 90. ÖFB-Cupfinale sensationell den österreichischen Cuptitel mit dem Wolfsberger AC errungen und hätte sogar noch Chancen auf den österreichischen Meistertitel. Derzeit liegen die Kärntner vier Runden vor Meisterschaftsende drei Punkte hinter Austria Wien und Sturm Graz, vor RB Salzburg und Rapid.

Liverpool have secured the Premier League title with this win! New manager Arne Slot can celebrate the English championship in his first season in charge after Jürgen Klopp’s departure. Klopp had won the Premier League in 2019/20.

…West Ham safe from relegation, and Crystal Palace in FA Cup final!

The season is nearing its end in the English Football League. Wrexham gained back-to-back promotions with a 3-0 win over Charlton at their Racecourse Ground on Saturday. With this victory Wrexham secured second place in League One behind Birmingham and will play in the Championship next season.

In the Premier League West Ham lost 2-3 at Brighton the same afternoon, but with Ipswich also being defeated by Newcastle, the Hammers are safe from relegation despite not having won in two months or seven games now. Being on only 36 points from 34 games is very disappointing for the east London side , but with a derby against Tottenham ahead, the Hammers could still climb up the table next weekend if they beat Spurs.

“We have four big games to end the season,” said a disappointed Jarrod Bowen after West Ham had been in a winning position with 2-1 up in the 83rd minute and not picked up any points due to two late goals.

“We have Tottenham next week, which is a big derby for us, so we have to bounce back.”

Later that evening Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace defeated Aston Villa 3-0 in the FA Cup final and will play Nottingham Forest or Manchester City in the final. What a feat for the Eagles! 🦅 Glasner‘s team had a disastrous start into the season and were without a win in eight games, but with chairman Steve Parish placing his trust in Glasner, they managed to turn the season around completely and now have the chance to win silverware. Glasner has already won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022, but Crystal Palace, founded in 1905, have not yet won any major trophy in their history. The biggest successes in the club’s history were reaching the FA Cup final in 1990 and 2016 and finishing third in the English First Division in the 1990/91 season.

In League Two Wimbledon lost at home to Port Vale that have secured automatic promotion to League One with this win. Wimbledon is going to play Grimsby Town next week and must not lose this last game of the campaign if they want to keep their place in the play-offs.

Cup win for Academy of Football

West Ham United were crowned U18 Premier League Cup champions 2024/25 following a 2-1 victory over Reading at Select Car Leasing Stadium on Tuesday evening.

This win comes only two years since the young Hammers in 2022/23 won the FA Youth Cup by defeating Arsenal 5-1 in the final at Emirates Stadium. The same season Kevin Keen’s U18 were also champions of the Premier League South Division.

What a wonderful achievement for the young Irons. West Ham United U18s lead coach Lauris Coggin hailed the Academy of Football values shown by his young players who made history again by lifting the Premier League Cup in 2025 for the first time:

“It means so much,” he reflected. “I’ve seen a lot of their journey. Not just us as staff and players, but the whole Academy, to win it at the end of a long competition is a fantastic feeling for everyone.”

Most disappointing and dull

season in West Ham’s recent history!

West Ham haven’t won for six games now. Also against Southampton (already relegated on 10 points out of 32 games before Saturday‘s match) the Hammers were unable to win and drew 1-1.

West Ham aren’t mathematically safe so far, and they could still be relegated if Ipswich won 16 points more than West Ham out of their remaining six games (which is quite unlikely to happen, but not impossible)…

UPDATE: Following a 0-4 defeat against Arsenal on Sunday, Ipswich Town now 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧 win their last five Premier League games and hope West Ham United lose their last five fixtures to avoid relegation to the Championship. (The Tractor Boys have only won four games all season.)

Die Woche der 2 1/2 1/4-Finali

Was für eine Fußballwoche! Just in der Karwoche, der “Holy Week”, fiebern mein Freund Alfred und ich mit insgesamt drei europäischen Viertelfinalisten mit und hoffen, dass diese vor dem Karfreitag in die Semifinalphase von Champions League und Conference League einziehen!

Warum aber nur 2,5 Viertelfinali? Weil ich Arsenal mit “one of us” Declan Rice nur “halb” zähle – schließlich ist Declan ein “Ex-Hammer” und Arsenal eigentlich nicht “mein Verein”. Und da man gegen Real Madrid mit David Alaba spielt, ist das “support”-technisch gar keine so einfache Entscheidung.

Am schwersten scheint jedenfalls die Aufgabe von Alfred’s Aston Villa heute Abend zu sein: man muss zu Hause im Villa Park ein 1:3 gegen PSG aufholen. Und die Pariser wollen nach 2019/20 heuer unbedingt das zweite Mal in ihrer Geschichte ins Champions League-Finale kommen (damals verlor man gegen Bayern im “Corona-Finale” in Lissabon 0:1)! Aston Villa hat dagegen schon einmal den Europapokal der Landesmeister gewonnen: 1982 besiegte man die Bayern in Rotterdam mit 1:0.

Arsenal fährt hingegen mit einem 3:0-Vorsprung zum Rückspiel am Mittwoch nach Madrid, nachdem zwei Declan Rice-Tore und ein Assist den “Gunners” die Tür zum Semifinale weit geöffnet haben. Aber die “Königlichen“ haben so einen Rückstand schon öfters im Europacup aufgeholt. Das sagt nach entsprechender Anfrage ChatGPT:

Und auch aus jüngerer Zeit spuckt die KI zahlreiche Real Madrid-Comebacks aus, wenn auch nicht nach derart hohen Auswärtsniederlagen wie nun gegen Arsenal:

1. Gegen Paris Saint-Germain (Achtelfinale 2021/22) – Hinspiel: 0:1-Niederlage in Paris Rückspiel: 3:1-Sieg im Bernabéu (Gesamt: 3:2) Spielverlauf: Nach einem 0:2-Gesamtrückstand erzielte Karim Benzema innerhalb von 17 Minuten einen Hattrick und drehte das Spiel zugunsten von Real Madrid. 

2. Gegen Manchester City (Halbfinale 2021/22) – Hinspiel: 3:4-Niederlage in Manchester Rückspiel: 3:1-Sieg nach Verlängerung im Bernabéu (Gesamt: 6:5) Spielverlauf: In der 90. Minute lag Real Madrid mit 3:5 zurück. Zwei schnelle Tore von Rodrygo erzwangen die Verlängerung, in der Benzema per Elfmeter den entscheidenden Treffer erzielte. 

3. Gegen VfL Wolfsburg (Viertelfinale 2015/16) – Hinspiel: 0:2-Niederlage in Wolfsburg Rückspiel: 3:0-Sieg im Bernabéu (Gesamt: 3:2) Spielverlauf: Cristiano Ronaldo erzielte alle drei Tore im Rückspiel und führte Real Madrid ins Halbfinale. 

4. Gegen Liverpool (Achtelfinale 2022/23) – Hinspiel: 5:2-Sieg in Liverpool nach 0:2-Rückstand Rückspiel: 1:0-Sieg im Bernabéu (Gesamt: 6:2) Spielverlauf: Trotz eines frühen 0:2-Rückstands im Hinspiel drehte Real Madrid das Spiel mit fünf Toren und sicherte sich souverän das Weiterkommen. 

Das wird also spannend am Mittwoch Abend in Madrid! Und zum Glück kann ich auf Sky live mitfiebern, denn der ärgerliche Konkurrenz-Sender Canal+ überträgt Inter Mailand gegen Bayern. Die anderen drei Champions League-Viertelfinali bleiben bei Sky!

Am GRÜN-Donnerstag steigt dann unser gemeinsames Viertelfinale – für Alfred und mich – Rapid Wien gegen Djurgarden in der Conference League. Hier führen die Grün-Weißen nach dem “first leg” mit 1:0 und sollten es daheim im ausverkauften Weststadion schaffen, in das Semifinale gegen Chelsea (nach 3:0 auswärts gegen Legia Warschau schon so gut wie weiter) einzuziehen. Ein bitteres Ergebnis wie Ende August in den Europa League-Playoffs gegen Braga, als man im Rückspiel in Hütteldorf schon 2:0 führte und dann doch noch ausschied, sollte es diesmal nicht geben! Der Schiedsrichter ist allerdings der selbe wie damals: der nicht unumstrittene Anthony Taylor aus England. Aber mit dem 2:0-Derbysieg am Wochenende und dem 1:0 im Hinspiel in Stockholm hat sich das Team von Robert Klausz Selbstvertrauen geholt – und wenn es um etwas ging, dann hat die Mannschaft trotz des schwachen Starts in das Jahr 2025 zuletzt immer “geliefert”!

Dennoch sollte man bekanntlich nie allzu sicher sein im Fußball. Es steht weder fest, “ob” noch “wann” man in London gegen Chelsea spielen wird. An sich hätten laut “Turnierbaum” die “Blues” zuerst Heimvorteil, wenn aber Tottenham in der Europa League mit einem Sieg gegen Frankfurt aufsteigen sollte (Hinspiel 1:1), würden die Spurs ihr erstes Semifinale zu Hause in London spielen. Dann müsste Chelsea auf dem Weg zu dem einzigen Titel, der in der beeindruckenden Sammlung der Londoner noch fehlt – denn die Conference League hat man im Gegensatz zu West Ham noch nie geholt – aufgrund der “city rule” der UEFA am 1. Mai zuerst auswärts antreten.

Hoffen wir also, dass die “Blues” bei diesem Semifinal-Match gegen den SK Rapid spielen werden und dass Alfred und ich ein historisches europäisches Semifinale – das erste seit 29 Jahren! – erleben werden: “Come on you boys in green!”

West Ham lost, Rapid won

Narrow defeat at Liverpool

BBC wrote that the defeat which West Ham suffered on Sunday afternoon at Anfield means West Ham are winless in their last five league matches – a longer run without victory than any they suffered under former manager Julen Lopetegui.
That is a harsh stat considering how West Ham played in the second half on Sunday. After a dismal first half (again the Hammers starting XI played as if they were in preseason) the manager made some substitutions and suddenly West Ham’s play was much more positive.

The Hammers finally were level when Wan-Bissaka’s left-wing cross caused panic in the Reds’ defence and van Dijk’s attempted clearance inadvertently bounced off substitute Andy Robertson and into the net. The Hammers would have got at least a point if not for the brilliance of Liverpool keeper Alisson and van Dijk‘s header in the 89th minute when Liverpool‘s skipper outjumped his marker to head in from six yards from a right-wing corner. West Ham sub Niclas Fullkrug afterwards hit the woodwork with a chance to make it 2-2.

While West Ham are now only one place above the drop zone, they are 14 points ahead of Ipswich Town in 18th with six games to go. They must be careful to avoid sleepwalking into a nightmare end to the campaign.

On Sunday SK Rapid won the 345th Vienna derby against Austria 2-0 (1-0) in the Admiral Bundesliga Champions Group and poured a bucket of cold water on the “Violets” fight for the title. The home win for the hosts after goals from Matthias Seidl (5th) and Mamadou Sangare (70th) was well deserved and Rapid gained confidence for the second leg of the Conference League quarter-final at home against Djurgarden IF on Thursday (9.00 pm). Rapid won the first leg in Sweden 1-0. Inspired by this, Matthias Seidl scored in the fifth minute for the Green-Whites in front of 23,000 spectators, and in the second half it was a beautiful goal scored by Sangare which sealed Rapid’s well deserved win.

Shortly after Guido Burgstaller was brought on as a second half substitute for the second time after a skull fracture he had suffered in December, it was midfielder Mamadou Sangare who danced past three Austrian players and made it 2:0 with a shot under the cross bar.

Rapid claimed their third derby home win in a row and only their third victory of 2025 in their ninth league game of the year. The green-and-whites remain in fifth place in the Bundesliga table – three points behind the WAC, five behind Salzburg and seven behind Austria.
