The Greens Are Coming
West Ham blog âWest Ham Till I Dieâ takes a look at Thursdayâs Europa League game in London. By RapidHammer
On Thursday West Ham will host Rapid Vienna in their first Europa League group stage home game. Their opponents from Austria have qualified nine times within the last twelve years for the UEL group stages and are well known throughout Europe for their passionate support. For me this game will be a very special occasion as I am a lifelong supporter of the “Greens” (or “green-whites” as the club from Vienna is called) and I also have supported the Hammers for many, many years and often been to Upton Park and the London Stadium. Having not been to London for almost two years now, I am looking very much forward to grace the terraces of the London Stadium again, have a pint with friends and revel in the atmosphere of a West Ham game under the lights … and forget about all the bureaucratic obstacles which paved the way to London: take a PCR test in Austria, book a day-2-test in advance, fill in the extensive immigration form, upload all the certificates when checking in and, as a precaution, also print all these papers instead of just storing them on the mobile phone etc, etc.
Back to the football: This is only the second time West Ham and Rapid play each other, the first game having been a friendly in 1955 which ended 1:1 at Upton Park. Though the clubs haven’t met since, their old and more recent history shows some similarities: Rapid Vienna was founded in 1898 as âFirst Workersâ Football Club of Viennaâ when workers of a hat maker formed the club. Like the “Thames Ironworks FC”, Rapid changed its name shortly after their foundation and, also like West Ham, they had different original colours than they have today. The teamâs original colours were red and blue, but soon after renaming the club its colours were changed to green and white in 1904. And like West Ham, Rapid have a large and very passionate fan base.
It was back in 1968 when I started supporting Rapid Vienna and, then a young school boy, began to collect newspaper articles related to the club. According to the oldest article of my collection, a then newly signed player said after watching his first home game of Rapid: âThatâs an atmosphere Iâve never experienced before!” The astonished man was Tom Soendergaard, a Danish international.
In this year 1968, Rapid Vienna celebrated their 25th domestic league title which meant that they had not only set an Austrian record but became the club that had won most domestic league titles on the continent. However it took them 14 years to bag their 26th championship in 1982. So far Rapid has won the Austrian league 32 times, their last win of the Austrian Bundesliga coming in 2008. Last season and the season before they finished runners-up behind Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg. But much to the regret of Rapid’s supporters’ the wait for silverware now stretches to more than a decade – they never had to wait that long without winning at least the Austrian Cup. Nevertheless, Rapid is still by far the most popular club in Austria, but having significantly less financial funding than Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg (owned by billionaire Didi Mateschitz) Rapid cannot keep up pace with Red Bull. On the other hand Rapid are proud of being a “membership association” which doesnât belong to anybody else, and they try to compensate the lack of financial fund by supporting young and talented players. However, their biggest talent of recent years, Yusuf Demir (18) has already joined FC Barcelona on loan with an option to buy and wears the read and blue kit numer 11 now.
As to mention some of the players you will see in London Stadium, there are three players with experience in English football: Kevin Wimmer (number 6) played briefly for Spurs and later (like Marko Arnautovic) for Stoke, Christoph KnasmĂźllner (number 8) played for Barnsley and young Thierno Ballo (number 10) is on loan from Chelsea U23. My favourite players of the current team are defenders Leo Greiml (30) and Filip Stojkovic (22), midfielders Marco GrĂźll (27) and Robert Ljubicic (5) and winger Kelvin Arase (36).
Regardless of the above mentioned long wait for silverware, the atmosphere generated by the Rapid support in their home ground Allianz Stadium or “Weststadion” (because of its location in the western neighborhood HĂźtteldorf) is still the best in Austria and something special throughout Europe. âThe atmosphere was terrific,â then Aston Villa coach Martin OâNeill had to concede in 2009 (when his team was defeated 1-0 in Vienna due to a goal scored by a certain Nikica Jelavic), and an astonished Villa supporter said: âJesus, their fans are something elseâ. Aston Villa was twice eliminated in the Europa League play-offs by Rapid in 2009 and 2010, and the Rapid fans mocked them in 2010: “You’re nightmare returns”.
This time, more than a decade later, and six years after the Hammers’ very own Europa League “double nightmare”, when they were knocked out of the Europa League in two consecutive seasons by Romanian club Astra Giurgiu in 2015 and 2016, West Ham most probably will not taste defeat against their Austrian opponents. Rapid Vienna struggle in the domestic league this season, they are only eleventh in the Bundesliga (consisting of twelve clubs) and have an important league game next Sunday. If they would lose on Sunday the “Green-Whites” would occupy the very unfamiliar last place of the table. Therefore not only West Ham manager David Moyes will select a team different from the one that beat Leeds last weekend, but also his opponent Didi KĂźhbauer could rest some of his players.
Nevertheless, the Rapid fans are looking very much forward to the game in London and I am sure that the away end will be full of enthusiastic supporters that will make themselves heard throughout the entire game. The âBlock Westâ is known as the best and loudest stand in the country and a large crowd usually follows Rapid to away matches. The âUltrasâ (founded in 1988) and other fan clubs have developed a unique fan culture in Vienna and it is their ambition to show a new fan choreography in every game.
But in the return leg against the Irons on November 25th the fans will not only show a new choreography. They will also have to show their vaccination certificate to gain entry into the “Weststadion”. To present a negative Covid test is not enough from October 1st: In Vienna only double-jabbed or people who have had Covid-19 will be allowed into the ground (these rules are in force for all events with more than 500 spectators from October 1st to 31st in Vienna, but could be extended into November , dependent on the situation in the intensive care units due to Covid-19).
But returning to the similarities between the two clubs, also regarding the stadium there is a striking coincidence: Rapid have built a new stadium and moved to the new “Weststadion” exactly the same year in which West Ham relocated to the London Stadium (2016). By the way, Rapid played an English team in their opening game in the new stadium and managed to beat Chelsea in this friendly game.
And, like West Ham, Rapid have won a “war championship”: Rapid beat Schalke 04 in 1941 in Berlin to win the German Championship (when Austria was annexed to the German Third Reich until 1945). One year before West Ham beat Blackburn Rovers to win the Football League War Cup in 1940. Furthermore Rapid and West Ham have both reached two European Cup finals. Albeit contrary to West Ham, the Austrians have lost both of them (1985 in Rotterdam against Everton and 1996 in Brussels against Paris Saint Germain). However, also Rapid have won a European Cup, the so-called Mitropa Cup, a predecessor competiton of the European Cups, in 1930.
However, there’s also something very unique about Rapid Vienna: the âRapid Viertelstundeâ. Almost since the clubâs beginnings, the supporters of the âGreensâ have announced the last fifteen minutes of the game by rhythmic clapping at home or away.
Therefore don’t be surprised or bemused when the Rapid support will start clapping in the 75th minute – no matter what the score. It is part of Rapid’s rich history to have often managed to turn around a seemingly hopeless situation by not giving up and, with the support from the stands, fighting their way to a win in the last quarter of the game, just before the final whistle. The clapping marking the beginning of the “Rapid Viertelstunde” shall spur the players on and remind them to give everything until the final whistle according to Rapid’s motto: “Auf geht’s Rapid, gemeinsam kämpfen und siegen!” (Come on Rapid, fight and win together).

What A Grande Finale!
Gestern waren wir bei den Symphonikern im Wiener Musikverein, die Antonin Dvoraks Symphonie Nr. 7 in D-Moll als letztes der vier StĂźcke ihres Konzerts spielten. Die Symphonie endet mit einem Ăźberwältigenden Klanggewitter, einem echten âGrande Finaleâ!
Und ein ebensolches Grande Finale inszenierten auch die Hammers bei ihrem Auswärtssieg gegen Leeds: In der 90. Minute wurde Michail Antonio von Declan Rice nach dessen energievollem Vorstoà angespielt, er manÜvrierte den Ball gekonnt an Leeds-Verteidiger Shackleton vorbei und ein platzierter Schuss ins rechte untere Eck versetzte das Away End in Ekstase.
West Ham kam damit nach 0:1 – RĂźckstand und einem zurecht nicht gegebenen Ausgleich durch Soucek schlieĂlich durch Bowenâs abgefälschten Schuss und Antonios späten Siegestreffer doch noch zu einem vollen Erfolg in einem vollen Stadion gegen eine laufstarke Leeds-Elf! Wie ein Marathon habe sich dieses March angefĂźhlt, meinte West Hamâs Antonio nachher.
Back to winning ways auch in der Liga also nach der Niederlage gegen Manchester Utd mit Mark Nobles vergebenem Elfmeter: die âlast minuteâ brachte diesmal wesentlich Erfreulicheres als vor einer Woche. Und der FuĂballgott ist auĂerdem – manchmal – gerecht: Manchester United bekam gestern beim Stand von 0:1 gegen Aston Villa in der letzten Spielminute einen Elfmeter zugesprochen. Rafinha verschoss und Aston Villa nahm alle drei Punkte aus Old Trafford mit!

Nachricht an einen Freund von gestern FrĂźh (re: ĂFB Cup, 2. Runde, Admira – Rapid)
âOptimistischer Ansatz fĂźr heute Abend: West Ham hat gegen ManUtd zu Hause in der Liga 1:2 verloren, im Ligacup gestern auswärts 1:0 gewonnen – bei Rapid wird es heute genauso eine Revanche fĂźr das 1:2 vor eineinhalb Wochen geben!â
Nachricht am nächsten Morgen:
Dabei war die Admira im ĂFB Cup der âAngstgegnerâ von Rapid: zuletzt 1985 jubelten nach einer Cup-Partie die GrĂźn-WeiĂen in der âSĂźdstadtâ vor den Toren Wiens – vor 36 Jahren!
Gestern ging man durch Verteidiger Max Ullmann gegen die von Ex-Rapidler Andi Herzog trainierten Admiraner in der 38. Minute in Fßhrung, kassierte aber nach der Pause das 1:1, als sich Admira-Stßrmer Marlon Mustapha gegen den sonst so verlässlichen Leo Greiml stark durchsetzte.
Nach dem 1:1 wachte Rapid aber so richtig auf uns es spielten eigentlich nur mehr eine Mannschaft und der groĂartige Admira-Keeper Andreas Leitner: was der alles hielt, nĂśtigte ORF-Kommentator Helge Payer, frĂźher selbst Rapid- und Teamkeeper, hĂśchste Hochachtung ab. Und so musste man in die Verlängerung, in der Rapid trotz der vielen Spiele in diesem Herbst den Admiranern kräftemäĂig Ăźberlegen war.
Trotz mehrerer Chancen brauchte es aber schlieĂlich doch einen Elfmeter, um siegreich vom Platz zu gehen; aber glĂźcklicherweise blieb es bei einem Elfer, der den Rapidlern vor den kommenden schweren Aufgaben gegen Sturm und West Ham zumindest das ElfmeterschieĂen ersparte: in der 110. Minute, nach einem Foul an Kelvin Arase, verwandelte Marco GrĂźll den Penalty eiskalt und sicher.
EndgĂźltig âden Sack zumachenâ hätte Rapid-DebĂźtant Thierno Ballo kĂśnnen, die Chelsea-Leihgabe vergab aber in der 120. Minute allein vor Leitner. Durchaus vergleichbar den vielen Chancen, die West Ham am Ende des Ligacup-Matches gegen Manchester Utd nicht verwerten konnte!
Aber egal: ebenso wie die Hammers schafften auch die HĂźtteldorfer den Sieg und damit die Revanche fĂźr die vorangegangene Heimniederlage gegen Manchester Utd respektive Admira!
Das gibt dem grĂźn-weiĂen Anhang Hoffnung und auch der Trainer sieht das so:
âDer Sieg hilft der Mannschaft, speziell in dieser Situation,â sagte Didi KĂźhbauer in einer emotionalen Rede nach dem Spiel. âWir haben genau gewusst: Wenn wir das Spiel verlieren, wären wir auch drauĂen aus dem Cup. Dann wäre es fĂźr uns alle nicht besser geworden – fĂźr den Trainer und die Mannschaft nicht. Deshalb haben wir uns einen guten Gefallen getan, dass wir verdient in die nächste Runde einziehen. Aber das nächste von vielen schweren Spielen steht bevor. Deshalb lassen wir das jetzt so und freuen uns Ăźber den Sieg.”
Das nächste Spiel im Allianz Stadion wird Ăźbrigens das letzte â3G-Spielâ sein, wenn am Sonntag der SK Sturm zu Gast ist. Ab 1. Oktober gilt dann in Wien in Stadien und bei anderen Veranstaltungen mit mehr als 500 Zuschauern â2Gâ: nur mehr Genesene und Geimpfte dĂźrfen dann hinein! Die mĂźssen aber nicht getestet sein – im Gegensatz zu den Anforderungen bei der Einreise nach England; da mĂźssen auch Geimpfte einen negativen Test vorweisen und sich sogar innerhalb von 48 Stunden im Land nochmals testen lassen.
Ganz schĂśn viel Aufwand diese fĂźr nächste Woche geplante Reise auf die Insel, aber die Freude darĂźber, endlich wieder nach London und ins Stadion der Hammers zu kommen, ist groĂ! SchĂśn wäre es, wenn wir uns vorher noch Ăźber zwei Liga-Erfolge der Konkurrenten vom kommenden Donnerstag freuen kĂśnnten: West Ham spielt Samstag gegen Leeds (A) und Rapid, wie gesagt, gegen Sturm (H).

Eco War?
It’s out of question that we have to act to curb global warming and that much more has to be done if we want to avoid that time will be running out. But as protesters jam up the M25 disrupting traffic on the motorway encircling almost all of Greater London, and councillors close locals roads, lower-income workers are asking climate activists to check their privilege. 
Ben Wright and Charlotte Gill cover this topic in The Telegraph and finally come to the somehow ironic conclusion:
“Few things are as quintessentially British as the class system and talking about the weather. It seems we have now contrived a way to combine two of our ruling passions.”
WHU win at Old Trafford, now face ManCity
Die Auslosung der vierten Runde des Ligacups beschert West Ham gleich den Titelverteidiger: Cupholder Manchester City – Gewinner der letzten vier League Cups! – wird Ende Oktober ins London Stadium reisen, um gegen West Ham in der Runde der letzten 16 des Carabao Cups anzutreten.
Warum nicht auch diesen Manchester-Klub biegen? 2006 besiegte West Ham die âCitizensâ im FA Cup Viertelfinale auf dem Weg ins Finale gegen Liverpool.
On the weekend West Ham visit Leeds on the Saturday (15:00BST), and next Thursday Rapid Wien will be hosted by the Hammers at London Stadium (20:00BST).
Standing permitted
Die FuĂballvereine der englischen Premier League und die Clubs der zweitklassigen Championship dĂźrfen ab dem 1. Jänner 2022 unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen eine begrenzte Anzahl von Stehplätzen im Stadion anbieten.
(ORF.at/Agenturen) Diese Bekanntgabe kam am Mittwoch von der fĂźr Sicherheit in FuĂballstadien zuständigen Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA). Der Schritt ist Teil eines Pilotprojekts. Um daran teilzunehmen, mĂźssen sich die Clubs bis zum 6. Oktober bewerben.
Voraussetzung ist, dass Zuschauer weiterhin die MĂśglichkeit haben, sich im Stehplatzbereich zu setzen. Dazu sind Klappsitze erforderlich, die nicht blockiert werden dĂźrfen. Jeder Platz muss einer Person zugewiesen sein. AuĂerdem dĂźrfe durch die Stehplätze nicht die Sicht anderer, etwa im Rollstuhl sitzender, Fans eingeschränkt werden. Sofern eine Stehplatzlizenz erteilt wird, gilt sie fĂźr einen klar festgelegten Bereich und zunächst nur bis zum Saisonende.
Seit Jahren wird in England Ăźber eine WiedereinfĂźhrung von Stehplätzen diskutiert. Seit mehr als 25 Jahren ist es FuĂballstadien in England gesetzlich verboten, Stehplätze anzubieten. Das Verbot geht im Wesentlichen auf die Hillsborough-Katastrophe in Sheffield im Jahr 1989 zurĂźck. Beim FA-Cup-Spiel zwischen Liverpool und Nottingham Forest kam es auf einer ĂźberfĂźllten TribĂźne zu einem Massengedränge, in dessen Folge 97 Menschen ums Leben kamen.
Doppeltes Elfmeter-Drama bringt zwei Niederlagen

Declan Rice had the ball in his hands, but he had missed his last penalty â in fact West Ham had missed four of their previous five â so the penalty duties were handed to the experienced Noble. It was the 95th minute.
And so Nobleâs first touch was to drive the ball to David de Geaâs left, but the goalkeeper dived to push it away â the first penalty Noble had missed in five years â and the first that De Gea had saved in that time. He was mobbed at the end by relieved team-mates, joined by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
In fact, it was seven years â 22 penalties â since De Gea had saved a spot kick in the Premier League and he looked as stunned as Noble.
Gegen den TabellenfĂźhrer
Wieder einmal eine Parallelaktion: Rapid und West Ham spielen am Sonntag gegen die Tabellenfßhrer ihrer Ligen: WHU zu Hause gegen Manchester United, Rapid auswärts gegen RB Salzburg.
Manchester Utd weist nach vier Spielen der Premier League drei Siege und ein Unentschieden bei einer Tordifferenz von +8 (11:3) auf, West Ham ist allerdings mit zwei Siegen und zwei Remis (Torverhältnis 10:5) auch noch unbesiegt.
Der SK Rapid muss in Salzburg gegen RBS antreten, das in der Bundesliga Ăźberhaupt noch keinen Punkt abgegeben hat – ganz im Gegensatz zu Rapid, die heuer nicht gut in die Bundesliga gestartet sind: 2 Siege, 2 Unentschieden und schon 3 Niederlagen stehen nach 7 Runden zu Buche. Und während die Hammers in Zagreb mit 2:0 in die Europa League gestartet sind, hat Rapid von Genk in der letzten Minute einen âNackenschlagâ oder âeinen in die Fresseâ, wie Trainer Didi KĂźhbauer sagte, bekommen.
FĂźr Rapid wird es also ungleich schwerer, der letzte Sieg gegen Salzburg in der Saison 2018/19 (ein 2:0 im Allianz Stadion am 24. Februar 2019) liegt schon eine gefĂźhlte Ewigkeit zurĂźck (seither gab es in Liga und ĂFB Cup insgesamt 11 Spiele und fĂźr Rapid daraus einen Punkt). Der letzte Auswärtssieg fĂźr Rapid in Salzburg datiert Ăźberhaupt schon von 2015.
West Ham hat in der Saison 2019/20 das Hinspiel gegen ManUtd gewonnen (wie bei Rapid gegen Salzburg in der vorherigen Saison war das ebenfalls ein 2:0-Heimsieg) und in der selben Saison auswärts ein 1:1 erreicht. In der letzten Spielzeit gab es aber fßr die Hammers gegen die Red Devils nix zu holen: 1:3, 0:1 n.V. im FA Cup und nochmals 0:1 in der Liga waren die Resultate.
Nun ist Cristiano Ronaldo zurßck in Manchester und die Red Devils lachten letztes Wochenende nach zwei Ronaldo-Toren prompt von der Tabellenspitze. In der Champions League traf Ronaldo dagegen eine Ordnerin und nur einmal ins Tor und es gab eine ßberraschende Auswärtsniederlage (1:2 gegen Young Boys Bern).
Mal sehen, was der Sonntag bringt! Hammers-Manager David Moyes wirkt jedenfalls um einiges optimistischer als Rapids Didi KĂźhbauer. Als ein Reporter zu Moyes meinte: âNever a good time to play Manchester United, I imagine?â antwortete der:
âI donât know if itâs a good to time to play West Ham either.â
Und das sagte Didi KĂźhbauer zum Salzburg-Match: âEs ist eine schwierige Aufgabe fĂźr uns, aber trotzdem wollen wir die erste Mannschaft sein, die dort punktet. Dass man dazu eine sehr gute Leistung braucht, ist auch keine Frage. Es spricht Vieles gegen uns, das ist auch logisch. Wenn gegen Genk kurz vor Schluss die Niederlage besiegelt wird und jetzt die beste Mannschaft Ăsterreichs kommt, werden viele meinen, dass das eine klare Angelegenheit ist. Wir wissen ganz genau: Nur eine Top-Leistung kann zu Punkten fĂźhren!”
