Ex-Klagenfurter trifft
Come on you Irons!
Southgate resigns
BREAKING
Two days after losing the Euro 2024 final to Spain, England manager Gareth Southgate has told the fans via the Football Association website that he quits from his role after 102 games in charge of the Three Lions team.

Gareth Southgate’s departing words are as follows:
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.
“But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”
Southgate is the only manager bar 1966 World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey to lead the England men’s team into a major tournament final.
He managed England at four major tournaments, reaching the finals of the Euro 2020 (in 2021) and 2024, and also reaching the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and quarter-finals in 2022.

Spain strike late…
….to break England‘s and already substituted Harry Kane‘s hearts
The pain goes on. And on. Fifty-eight years and still it goes on for England. Five finals and still no win for Harry Kane.

Spain (4-2-3-1): U Simón — D Carvajal, R Le Norman (Nacho 83), A Laporte, M Cucurella — Rodri (M Zubimendi 46), F Ruiz — L Yamal (M Merino 89), D Olmo, N Williams — A Morata (M Oyarzabal 68). Booked Olmo.
Gareth Southgate had spoken about wanting to win “so much that it hurts” but hurt is what England were left with and they can have no real complaint as Spain won the European Championship. Spain were the best team at the Euros. There is no doubt about that. They won all seven of their games and their young wingers – Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal – are simply wonderful. Spain knocked out the hosts Germany and the favourites France and they have beaten England and have now won their last four major tournament finals. (Jason Burt, The Telegraph)

Kane has been the best England player of his generation, the most monumental scorer, but until he changes it, this will be part of his story: the missed occasions, the pain of falling short. Five finals have come and gone now. The edge of glory is the sharpest edge of all. (James Gheerbrant, The Times)
Finals Kane has lost
League Cup 2015 Chelsea 2 Tottenham 0
Champions League 2019 Liverpool 2 Tottenham 0
Euro 2020 Italy 1 England 1 (Italy won 3-2 on penalties)
League Cup 2021 Manchester City 1 Tottenham 0
Euro 2024 Spain 2 England 1
England 1 Spain 2
An other Euro final lost… Substitute Cole Palmer levels for England in this thrilling final in Berlin only three minutes after coming on. But an other substitute scores for Spain with only four minutes and injury time to go.
A late Declan Rice header is cleared on the line, as is Guehi’s, and then Declan Rice heads over.
Soon after it’s game over. Spain win their seventh game of this Euro and are champions of Europe. England’s agony goes on…

Copa: Uruguay Dritter

“I’m a believer in dreams”
England manager Gareth Southgate described himself as an “England fan in the dugout” and a “believer in dreams” ahead of Sunday’s Euro 2024 final against Spain in Berlin.

He also said that, during his eight years in charge, “we’ve changed how English football is perceived around the world” having reached back-to-back Euros finals, a World Cup semi-final and quarter-final. Now they have the chance to win the nation’s first men’s trophy since 1966.
“I want to win so much on Sunday it hurts, don’t get me wrong, but I can handle whatever comes and I know it’s not going to change what the dog thinks when I walk back through the door!”
Southgate missed the decisive penalty as a player in the semi-final shoot-out against Germany at Euro ’96 in England. The 53-year-old has always insisted he would never let that moment “define” him, even if he still carries the scars, he said in a lengthy interview.
But asked about whether this final might do just that, he said: “It will. But in the eyes of others. Where I’m fortunate is that age and experience has made me more comfortable with who I am, what I’m good at, what I need to be better at. I completely understand that, in the end, winning and what that means completely changes how you’re going to be viewed by other people.“
Cockney kit in Kitz
West Ham have been training in the Austrian town of Kitzbühel since Sunday and will kick-off new head coach Julen Lopetegui’s tenure by taking on Ferencváros at the Sportstadion Langau, Kitzbühel, on Monday 15 July at 3pm BST (4pm CEST).

The pre-season game will be streamed live from the Tyrol on the Club’s official Website, App, YouTube, TikTok and Facebook channels, with coverage starting 15 minutes before kick-off.
Monday’s warm-up fixture will see the Irons wear their new 2024/25 Away Kit for the first time. It has been called the Cockney Kit and was launched this week in east London (below).
