VAR Premier League Statement
Premier League clubs voted on Thursday 6 June 2024 against Wolves’ proposal to abolish VAR and are in favour of continuing to operate VAR in the Premier League. While VAR produces more accurate decision making, it was agreed that improvements should be made for the benefit of the game and supporters.
As part of thorough discussions at the Annual General Meeting, it was agreed that PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), the Premier League and clubs all have important roles to play in improving the system and its reputation. As part of ongoing work to improve VAR, six key areas were focussed on as part of discussions with clubs:
- Maintaining a high threshold for VAR intervention to deliver greater consistency and less interruptions to the flow of the game.
- Reducing delays to the game, primarily through the introduction of Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) and the maintained high threshold for VAR intervention.
- Improving fan experience through a reduction in the delays, in-stadium announcements from referees after a post-VAR change of decision and where possible, an enhanced offering of big screen replays to include all VAR interventions.
- Working with PGMOL on the implementation of more robust VAR training to improve consistency, including an emphasis on speed of process while preserving accuracy.
- Increasing transparency and communication around VAR – including expanded communications from Premier League Match Centre and through broadcast programming such as Match Officials Mic’d Up.
- The delivery of a fan and stakeholder VAR communication campaign, which will seek to further clarify VAR’s role in the game to participants and supporters.
It was confirmed in April that SAOT will be introduced in the autumn of 2024.The technology will provide quicker and consistent placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking, and will produce high-quality broadcast graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters.
The Premier League and PGMOL will continue to lobby IFAB (International Football Association Board) to allow greater flexibility in the Laws of the Game to allow live video and audio broadcast during VAR reviews.
An expected winner

Real stumbled in the first half of this year’s Champions League final against Borussia in London Wembley. In a dreadful first-half performance they were spooked by Dortmund’s pace and intensity, living on their nerves as they somehow got to half-time level.
The very lively Karim Adeyemi spurned glorious chances, Niclas Fülllkrug saw his shot bounce back from the inside of the post and Sabitzer‘s long range shot was saved by Courtois.
And the longer Dortmund couldn’t score, the sense of inevitability that Real would survive and prevail was growing. Real (still without injured David Alaba, albeit sitting on the substitutes‘ bench) looked deep in trouble, as they did against Manchester City in the quarter-finals, and Bayern Munich in the last four. But with still 0-0 after more than seventy minutes, the inevitable happened:
Carvajal met Toni Kroos’ corner to glance a header beyond Swiss keeper Gregor Kobel and the hand of defender Mats Hummels (74‘), and Vinicius Jr swiftly added a second (83‘). Füllkrug thought he had pulled a goal back with a powerful header to make it 1-2, but the goal was rightly ruled out because of offside.
So in the end, Real Madrid rode their luck and overcame the outstanding challenge from Borussia Dortmund to win the Champions League again, and Dortmund lost their second Wembley final after 2013 when they were defeated by Bayern Munich.
It was Real‘s fifteenth win of the European Cup of Champions altogether, and their ninth since the competition has been reshaped and renamed as Champions League in 1992. it was a highly thrilling final, but the outcome somehow was inevitable, and still Real haven’t lost any of their Champions League finals in 43 years.
Carlo Ancelotti is the most successful manager in Champions League history. He now has won the trophy a record-breaking seven times as coach (five) and player (twice). However, there are two finals which still haunt him to this day. Ancelotti, 64, was manager of AC Milan when they lost to Liverpool in Istanbul in 2005 in arguably the most dramatic final of all time, when Milan was 3-0 up at half time, but Liverpool, managed by Rafa Benitez, equalised in the second half and won the penalty shoot-out. Ancelotti was also part of the Roma squad which lost to Liverpool in the 1984 final, although he missed the game itself through injury. But since then, Ancelotti who describes his management style as “quiet leadership” in his book, never had to taste defeat in any Champoins League final! Chapeau!
An unexpected winner
FA Cup Final: City 1 United 2
Manchester United won the FA Cup for the 13th time. And they thoroughly deserved it on that performance, putting on a terrific display of resilience and obduracy, while taking two of the few chances that came their way (Garnacho 30, Mainoo 39). Now the “Red Devils”, only 8th in the Premier League, will play in the Europa League, and Chelsea (6th) in the Conference League.

Manchester City gewann im Vorjahr die “Battle of Manchester” in Wembley und versucht im heutigen Finale als erstes Team in England zwei Mal hintereinander das “Double” Premier League und FA Cup zu gewinnen.
Manchester Utd würde sich bei einem Sieg noch für die Europa League qualifizieren.

Unwelcome ghost from the past
A new beginning, a fresh start – but a ghost from the past raised its ugly head: on the same day the Hammers confirmed the appointment of their new head coach, FA’s charge with betting fraud against West Ham‘s Paquetá which had been looming since last September, was brought forward, and this is going to bring Lopetegui‘s and Steidten‘s plans in disarray.
It was planned to transfer the Brazilian to Man City for £85m to boost the transfer budget, but with the allegations that Paquetá had intentionally seemed to get booked in four matches in 2022 and 2023 in order for one or more persons to profit from betting, this transfer seems highly unlikely now. The player denies the allegations and now has to respond until 3 June.
As Paul Walker writes on the KUMB website, “plain sailing it never is at West Ham”.

Saisonfinali überall: Sturm und Man City Meister
Vor einem Jahr schrieb der RapidHammer schon einmal davon, dass zwei beeindruckende nationale Serien zu Ende gehen könnten: jene von Bayern München, die ab 2012/13 eine deutsche Fußballmeisterschaft nach der anderen gewonnen haben, und jene von Red Bull Salzburg, das seit 2013/14 österreichischer Serienmeister war.
In der Vorsaison war es dann doch nicht soweit, Bayern wie Salzburg konnten Borussia Dortmund, das den Matchball in der letzten Runde vor eigenem Publikum mit einem Remis gegen Mainz vergab, bzw. Sturm Graz noch – wenn auch nur knapp – auf Distanz halten und die Meisterserien auf elf bzw. zehn Jahre verlängern.
Damit ist aber nun endgültig Schluss: nachdem man in Graz das letzte Mal 2010/11 über den österreichischen Meistertitel jubeln konnte, gelang heuer dem SK Sturm mit einem 2:0-Sieg über Austria Klagenfurt in der letzten Runde am Sonntag das Double: nach dem 2:1-Cupsieg gegen Rapid am 1. Mai brachten die „Blackies“ am Pfingstsonntag ihren zwei-Punkte-Vorsprung auf RBS über die Ziellinie! Schützenhilfe hatte schon früher der SK Rapid geleistet, der nach vielen Jahren wieder gegen die Bullen gewonnen hatte (2:0 in Hütteldorf am Wochenende nach der Cup-Finalniederlage). Dadurch konnte Sturm sich in den letzten drei Runden Unentschieden gegen Hartberg und den LASK leisten, gewann in der letzten Runde gegen Klagenfurt und blieb damit in der Tabelle voran, obwohl Salzburg den LASK mit 7:1 abschoss.
Gratulation nach Graz! In Hütteldorf wurde es dagegen nur Platz 4 hinter dem LASK wie in der Vorsaison.
In Deutschland war das Meisterrennnen in der Ersten Bundesliga dagegen nicht mehr spannend. Bayer Leverkusen blieb als erstes Team in der Bundesliga-Geschichte eine ganze Spielzeit lang ungeschlagen. Seit 14. April stand schon fest, dass Bayer deutscher Champion wird.
Am letzten Spieltag besiegte Leverkusen den FC Augsburg 2:1 (2:0) und holte damit in 34 Spielen 28 Siege und sechs Unentschieden. Insgesamt ist Leverkusen nun seit 51 Pflichtspielen ungeschlagen – die längste bekannte Serie! In den Finali der Europa League am Mittwoch in Dublin gegen Atalanta Bergamo und im DFB-Pokal am kommenden Samstag gegen Zweitligist 1. FC Kaiserslautern kann Leverkusen die Saison gar mit einem Triple krönen. West Ham und auch andere Gegner von Bayer waren immer wieder mal nah dran, aber am Ende gelang der „Werkself“ jedes Mal doch noch das oftmals späte Tor, das eine Niederlage verhinderte.
Beim FC Bayern hingegen ist das die erste titellose Saison seit zwölf Jahren. Der FCB verlor das vorerst letzte Spiel unter Thomas Tuchel 2:4 (2:0) und machte damit den VfB Stuttgart zum Vizemeister.
Union Berlin bleibt nach einer mühsamen Saison, in der man zunächst erstmals in der Champions League spielte und dann gegen den Abstieg kämpfen musste, erstklassig; gerade noch wurde der Klassenerhalt mit einem 2:1 in der letzten Runde gegen Freiburg sichergestellt, nur das bessere Torverhältnis gegenüber VfL Bochum, das gegen Werder Bremen verlor, verhinderte, dass die „Eisernen“ in die Relegation müssen.
In England war die Liga wie in Österreich spannend bis zum letzten Spieltag am Sonntag: bei einem Remis von West Ham gegen Manchester City und Sieg von Arsenal gegen Everton wären die Gunners punktegleich mit dem dann besseren Torverhältnis vor City gewesen. Aber es blieb beim „wären gewesen“, denn in Manchester verloren die Hammers 1:3 (1:2) und konnten Declan Rice‘s Gunners keine Schützenhilfe leisten. Trotz Sieg gegen Everton also wieder kein Titel für Arsenal, während Manchester City Historisches erreichte: zum vierten Mal en suite Sieger der Premier League, das hat vor Pep Guardiola noch niemand geschafft.
Für „Pep“ ist nach dem Ausscheiden aus Ligacup und Champions League zwar kein Triple (wie für seinen früheren Assistenten Xabi Alonso) mehr möglich, aber nächsten Samstag bei einem Sieg im FA Cup-Finale in der Neuauflage der “Battle of Manchester“ – im Vorjahr gewann City 2:1 – das Double.
Für Man Utd. ist es die letzte Chance sich für Europa zu qualifizieren. Verlieren die “Red Devils” gegen die “Sky Blues”, dann spielt statt ihnen Newcastle im Europacup. Auch Chelsea’s “European fate” hängt vom FA Cup-Endspiel an: Conference League oder Europa League ist für die nach einem starken Saisonfinish noch auf Platz 6 vorgerückten “Blues“ die Frage. Tottenham als Fünfter qualifizierte sich fix für die Europa League.
Für West Ham blieb Platz 9 mit 52 Punkten und einer Tordifferenz von -14. Während sich Jürgen Klopp nach 9 Saisonen mit einem Sieg gegen die Wolves vom FC Liverpool verabschiedete, sagte David Moyes mit der erwarteten Niederlage ade. Er war halb so lange bei den Hammers wie “the normal one” bei den “Reds”.
Auch er hat den Klub transformiert, war aber nie so unumstritten bei den Fans wie Klopp in Liverpool. Für West Ham waren es dennoch viereinhalb höchst erfolgreiche Jahre, die besten seit ich die Hammers ”supporte”, am Ende war aber einfach die Luft draußen. Ähnlich wie bei Aston Villa, das am letzten Spieltag 0:5 bei Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace verlor. Dennoch schafften die Villans neben City, Arsenal und Liverpool erstmals die Qualifikation für die Champions League, während West Ham nach drei historischen Saisonen im Europacup, in denen es mehrere „magische Nächte“ im London Stadium gab, die Qualifikation diesmal verpasste.
Danke für den Pokal, drei Europacup-Saisonen und viele denkwürdige Spiele! David Moyes ist es zu verdanken, dass es geheißen hat: “West Ham are massive!” Aber nun muss der neue Manager ein frisches Team formen, die aktuelle Mannschaft braucht dringend Auffrischung, um wieder “massive” zu werden.
