Only four days…
… to go. It’s getting closer. Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out, and then the night of the European semifinal game will have come: West Ham host Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday this week.
It’s not the first time the Hammers and the Germans meet in a European semifinal. In 1976 West Ham played Eintracht Frankfurt in the penultimate round of the Cupwinners’ Cup, and overcoming a one goal deficit from their 1-2 defeat in Frankfurt, the Irons managed to play the West Ham Way on a desperate pitch at Upton Park: “Under the given conditions it is remarkable just how much skill, one touch football and sublime finishing characterised the evening,” football writer Tim Crane says about a night which for everyone who was there sits above the rest for the sheer entertainment and high octane excitement at the Boleyn Ground.
In a pitch awash with puddles and mud, a header, a left-foot and a right-foot brought West Ham a place in a European final against Anderlecht. Here are some pictures, published by The West Ham Years:

Zwei Siege, ein Remis und…
… eine Niederlage hatten die vier Europa League-Semifinalisten am Sonntag nach den Erfolgen im Europacup zu verzeichnen. West Ham schaffte gegen Abstiegskandidaten Burnley, das erstmals nach der Entlassung von Langzeit-Manager Sean Dyche antrat, nach Rückstand immerhin ein 1:1 Unentschieden.
Der Gegner der Hammers im Halbfinale am 28. April und 5. Mai, die Eintracht aus Frankfurt, war in Berlin beim 1.FC Union zu Gast und verlor 0:2 (0:2). Ebenso wie Eintracht kassierte West Ham ein rasches Gegentor, hatte dann aber mehr Glück als die Frankfurter, weil Burnley im London Stadium einen Elfer vergab, während es bei der Eintracht bald ein zweites Mal im Kasten klingelte. Und während bei Eintracht Ladehemmung herrschte, gelang West Ham durch Tomas Soucek noch der Ausgleich in der zweiten Halbzeit.
Siegreich war der Sonntag dagegen für die Gegner, die im zweiten Halbfinale der Europa League auf einander treffen – wobei die Glasgow Rangers am Ostersonntag bereits ein anderes Semifinale gewannen. Und das noch dazu, wie am Donnerstag im EL-Viertelfinale, erneut in der Verlängerung! Ebenso wie gegen FC Braga siegten die Rangers mit 2:1 n.V. und konnten damit im schottischen FA Cup den FC Celtic ausschalten. Nun treffen sie im Finale des Scottish Cup auf Heart of Midlothian. Das Finale wird am 21. Mai im Glasgower Hampden Park gespielt.
Das Europa League Finale steigt drei Tage vorher – am Mittwoch, den 18. Mai 2022 – in Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, dem Heimstadion des FC Sevilla. Diesen Klub, der mit sechs Titeln der Rekordgewinner des UEFA-Pokals bzw. der UEFA Europa League ist und aktuell Zweiter der spanischen Liga, hat bekanntlich im Achtelfinale West Ham Utd aus dem Bewerb geworfen.
Und nun zum spätesten der vier Spiele: dieses bestritt am Ostersonntag-Abend RB Leipzig, die beste Frühjahrs-Mannschaft in Deutschland. Und es gab wieder einen Auswärtssieg, wie am Donnerstag beim 2:0 gegen Atalanta in der Europa League. Diesmal lautete das Resultat 1:0, mit dem Sieg über Bayer Leverkusen überholte RB die Leverkusener und ist nun Dritter in der deutschen Bundesliga.
League Cup Final = FA Cup Final
When has this happened before? The Clubs that reached the EFL Cup Final in February are the same which will fight for the FA Cup on 15 Mai: It’s Liverpool vs. Chelsea again at Wembley.
Liverpool won the Carabao Cup final on penalties in February but now Chelsea will have the chance for revenge. With a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, Chelsea have deservedly reached their third successive FA Cup final and will now hope to reverse recent history after losing the previous two to Arsenal and Leicester City.
Chelsea will be formidable opponents for Liverpool, who are in search of a historic quadruple: the Reds have won the League Cup 2021/22, eliminated Benfica in the Champions League quarter-final and are now facing a semi-final against Villareal, they have beat Manchester City 3-2 in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final 🏆, and they still are in the race for the Premier League 🦁 title, only one point behind Manchester City with a superior goal difference.
But of course Blues manager Thomas Tuchel will have something against, and want to grab at least one of the silverware at stake: “It is time for us to win a final at Wembley,” Tuchel said. “It is five finals I have lost, so we have to put the pressure on us to step up.”

It was a night that will be remembered forever by everyone connected with West Ham United.

Jesus gab alles auf, um uns zu retten. “Es ist vollbracht” (Joh 19,30) war ein Siegesruf, weil am Kreuz alles, was uns gefangen hielt, von Jesus besiegt wurde. In diesem Augenblick zerriss der Vorhang im Tempel von oben bis unten in zwei Teile (Matthäus 27, 50 – 51).
