West Ham United Statement #2
West Ham United have confirmed that the Club “reluctantly accept sanctions from UEFA” which means that their supporters “will, regrettably, not be permitted to travel for our next Europa League away fixture – against Rapid Vienna on Thursday 25 November”. The following statement has been published on WHU’s official website:
The Club’s acceptance of the sanctions follows receipt of the written reasons from UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) relating to the incidents which have led to West Ham United supporters being unable to attend the fixture in Vienna and the Club being fined.
Despite the Club’s robust processes around our own security and operations in support of our ticketed fans who travelled to Genk, evidence has been presented to confirm that a small number of ticketless individuals caused disturbances and illegally gained entrance to Genk’s stadium.
West Ham United condemn the behaviour of this group of individuals and we are working to identify them following their actions, which have now ultimately led to our supporters – the vast majority of whom behaved impeccably in Belgium – being punished and resulting in David Moyes’ team being forced to play in Austria without the backing of the Club’s fans, whose loyal and passionate support has spurred the Hammers on during an unbeaten opening four games of the Europa League adventure so far.
While the Club accepts the sanctions, we also wish to place on record our disappointment at the extremely short notice of the measures, which were received eleven days after the fixture in Genk and just over a week ahead of the match against Rapid Vienna which has limited our options significantly, and has sadly impacted supporters who have booked return travel and accommodation in Austria. The Club has had to consider these supporters and the impact on them both for this fixture and future fixtures if this process was subject to further delays.
Supporters who have already purchased tickets from West Ham United for the fixture in Vienna next week will automatically receive their refund via their original form of payment by 5pm on Wednesday 24November. Any supporters who have not received their refund by that time are kindly asked to contact the Ticket Office on 0330 030 1966.
Now that attendance at the match is no longer permitted, West Ham United strongly urges supporters NOT to travel to Vienna next week. Fans will not be granted access to the Allianz Stadion and any attempt to enter the stadium could lead to further sanctions for the individuals and the Club in the future.
WM 2022: Wer ist (fix) dabei?
Und wer kann es über die Play-Offs schaffen? Seit Dienstag Abend wissen wir es! Wer gegen wen in den Play-Offs vom 24. bis 29. März 2022 antritt, wird kommende Woche – am Freitag, 26. November um 17 Uhr – ausgelost.
England fixierte am Montag endgültig den ersten Platz in seiner Gruppe mit einem zweistelligen Sieg (10:0 gegen San Marino) und ist zum siebenten Mal en suite für die Fußballweltmeisterschaft qualifiziert. Schottland und Wales schafften es in die Play-Offs. Nordirland und Irland sind dagegen bei der Winter-WM in Qatar, die vom 21. November bis 18. Dezember 2022 stattfindet, sicher nicht dabei.
Aber der Reihe nach: Gruppenerste der 10 europäischen Quali-Gruppen wurden neben den Three Lions: Serbien (das zuletzt Portugal noch überholt hat), Spanien, die Schweiz (das an den letzten beiden Spieltagen Italien hinter sich gelassen hat), Frankreich, Belgien, Dänemark, Holland, Kroatien und Deutschland.
In den Play-Offs im Frühjahr 2022 ermitteln die 10 Gruppenzweiten und zwei Nationen, die sich über die Nations League qualifiziert haben (Österreich und Tschechien) noch drei weitere WM-Teilnehmer. In drei One-off-Semifinali haben die Teams, die in ihren jeweiligen Gruppen besser abgeschnitten haben, Heimvorteil.
Das sind: Wales, Portugal, Schweden, Italien, Russland und Schottland. Sie werden gegen das aus dem Topf mit Österreich, Nordmazedonien, Polen, Ukraine, Türkei und der Tschechischen Republik ihnen zugeloste Team zu Hause spielen. Diejenigen, die aus den sechs Semifinalspielen – in denen die Ukraine und Russland nach einer UEFA-Entscheidung aus politischen Gründen nicht gegeneinander gelost werden können – als Sieger hervorgehen, spielen dann in drei Play-off-Finali um die letzten drei Europa-Plätze für Qatar. Wer Heimrecht in den drei Endspielen hat, wird per Los ermittelt.
Für Österreich geht es also zuerst gegen ein Team aus dem starken Sextett (das könnte zB Italien oder Portugal sein); und im Fall eines Sieges im diesem Auswärts-Halbfinale muss dann noch ein weiterer siegreicher Play-off-Teilnehmer bezwungen werden, um “Qatar, we’re coming”, anstimmen zu können. Einfach ist das nicht!

West Ham United Statement
This is West Ham’s statement regarding the UEFA ban of away supporters from the Rapid Vienna game on 25 November:
West Ham United can confirm that we received an email late on Monday afternoon informing us that we are subject to sanctions from UEFA in relation to our Europa League Group H fixture against KRC Genk on Thursday 4 November.
The Club has been fined 34,500 Euros and also informed that our supporters are unable to travel for our next Europa League away fixture.
The Club are urgently seeking clarification from UEFA, particularly given the extremely short notice of the sanction, which will impact our supporters who have already bought tickets and made arrangements to travel to Austria our match at Rapid Vienna in just over a week.
We are surprised to receive these sanctions and disappointed for the fans who have behaved impeccably and supported the team throughout and will now be unable to travel to the next away Europa League fixture.
The Club has requested the full written reasons from UEFA regarding these sanctions and have asked them to expedite our request given that further delay could impact supporters once again.
The Club fully appreciates that supporters will have booked return travel and accommodation in Austria and are stressing this in our dialogue with UEFA. We will update supporters as soon as we are able to with further information.
Finally, we would like to assure those supporters who have already purchased one of the 1,700 tickets that sold out our allocation for this game that they will be automatically refunded by the Club should UEFA rule the sanctions stand and that they relate to next week’s match in Austria.
West Ham Fans Banned From Rapid Game
As if the uncertainty about new Covid rules in Vienna weren’t enough to give travelling fans headaches, now UEFA has ruled that West Ham’s supporters will be banned from attending their Europa League clash with Rapid Vienna next week.
Following the 2-2 draw with Genk earlier this month which was marred by crowd trouble the UEFA has ruled against West Ham:
Charge of West Ham for crowd disturbances, Art. 16(2)(h) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR) and throwing of objects, Art. 16(2)(b) DR upheld. “Decision: The CEDB has decided: to fine West Ham United FC €30,000 and ban the sale of tickets to its away supporters for the next one (1) UEFA competition match, for crowd disturbances, (and) to fine West Ham United FC €4,500 for throwing of objects.”
With all tickets already sold (the West Ham end and the stadium as a whole are sold out), what does that mean? Will English fans who have already got their tickets will be turned away? What about flights already booked which can’t be cancelled?
If West Ham appeal the decision that could mean that the decision would be temporarily lifted and supporters be able to travel to Vienna but potentially not be able to go to the next game in the knockouts. However, when Rapid’s fans were also banned following crowd troubles in London, the appeal was decided before the Zagreb game and the ban was upheld.
Everybody’s hoping that a club statement will be out imminently.
Paul Gludovatz 1946-2021
Die Website RAPIDHAMMER vergibt in unregelmäßigen Abständen den “Ehrentitel” HANSE DER WOCHE (Link) an Personen, die den Verfasser besonders beeindruckt haben.
2008 hat der damalige SV Ried- und davor langjährige ÖFB-Nachwuchstrainer Paul Gludovatz (damals 62) diese Auszeichnung erhalten. Heute muss ich berichten, dass Gludovatz am 12. November im Alter vom 75 Jahren an den Folgen einer Corona-Erkrankung verstorben ist.
Gludovatz war 2008 mit 62 Jahren nach 26 Jahren als erfolgreicher Nachwuchscoach beim Österreichischen Fußballbund – er erreichte mit der U16 bei der EM 1997 das Finale und mit der U20 bei der WM 2007 das Halbfinale – auf den Schleudersitz eines Vereinstrainers gewechselt. Der Burgenland-Kroate betreute in der Folge vier Jahre lang die SV Ried. In dieser Zeit erreichte er mit der Mannschaft 2010 und 2011 den Herbstmeistertitel und schaffte den ÖFB-Pokalsieg 2011. 2015, nach zwischenzeitlichen Engagements u.a. bei Sturm Graz und TSV Hartberg, kehrte er zu Ried zurück und rettete die Innviertler 2015/16 vor dem Abstieg. Dann setzte sich der anerkannte und für seine progressiven Ideen bekannte Trainer – etwa das 3-3-3-1 System bei der SV Ried, mit dem er die „Mauerblümchem“ aus dem Innviertel erfolgreich machte – kurz vor seinem 70. Geburtstag zur Ruhe.
Mich beeindruckte damals, als Gludovatz vom ÖFB zur SV Ried wechselte, der Mut, sich mit 62 von der Quasi-Pragmatisierung beim ÖFB in die “freie Wildbahn” zu begeben. Und dass er während seiner Zeit im Innviertel aus dem SV Ried einen Stammgast in der oberen Tabellenhälfte machte und den Cupsieg 2011 holte, zeigt, dass seine Entscheidung, noch als Klubtrainer zu arbeiten, richtig war!
Aber es war auch ein sehr gescheites Interview, das Gludovatz damals (2008) dem STANDARD gegeben hatte, das ich meinen Lesern nicht vorenthalten wollte. Darin fiel mir besonders die folgende Passage auf:
“Ich frage mich oft, was sich ein 20-Jähriger denkt, der nach dem Training duscht, heimfährt und die restliche Zeit totschlägt. Ich will den selbstverantwortlichen, kompletten Menschen, der sich in seiner Persönlichkeit weiterentwickelt. Fußballer zu sein bedeutet mehr, als ein Tor zu schießen oder zu verhindern. Er sollte auch ab und zu ein kluges Buch lesen.”
Das gilt sicher nicht nur für Fußballer!
Gludovatz selbst wird am Montag Abend beim Spiel des österreichischen Nationalteams gegen Moldawien gewürdigt werden. Er bleibt als ein innovativer Coach, der die Dinge oft auch „von der anderen Seite betrachtet“ hat (Peter Schöttel) und als jemand, der mutig neue Wege ging, in Erinnerung.

Rapid v West Ham: “2G-plus” Will Apply
The Mayor of Vienna has announced that new Covid-19 rules will come into force in Vienna. They would make it necessary to get tested in time before the Europa League game on Thursday week, or you risk to be refused entry into the ground.
For events with 25 or more people, the “2G+ rule” will apply (proof of “vaccinated or recovered”) with additional PCR test. This means that even if you are fully immunised by a double vaccination, have already had your third one, or have recovered from Covid (within the last six months) you would also have to present a valid PCR test, no older than 48 hours. The date of the test is valid, not the date of the result.
That means that supporters flying in on matchday would have to take the test in UK, because by taking the test in Vienna it would be unlikely to get the result before kick-off.
According to current legislation the so-called “2G+ events” are exempt from wearing a face mask. However having an FFP2 (kn95) mask (without air vent) is compulsory when coming to Vienna: in shops, restaurants and public transport everybody is obliged to wear this kind of face mask. The blue disposable masks like the ones used in hospitals are not sufficient in Austria.
Of course, all these rules “are subject to change” and could be tightened within the next weeks. So far we have a so-called “lock down for the unvaxed” who aren’t allowed to go to restaurants, cinemas, theatres etc. and are only allowed to buy things essential for life (food and medicine).
Though it is not very likely, if the Covid figures won’t come down within the next one or two weeks, a lock down for everybody could be on the cards and football games were to be played behind locked doors again like last season.
Let’s hope that won’t be necessary and the new measures, though highly disputed and legally questionable, will be sufficient to break the “fourth wave” in Austria !
Kretinsky kommt
Unterschiedlicher kann es bei zwei Fußballklubs an einem Tag kaum zugehen: Bei West Ham kommt ein Investor – bei Rapid wird der Trainer gefeuert.
Am Mittwoch wurde offiziell bekanntgegeben, dass bei Rapids nächstem Europa League-Gegner West Ham United der tschechische Milliardär Daniel Kretinsky (Bild unten) einsteigt. 27 Prozent der Anteile werden an seine Investmentgesellschaft „1890s Holding a.s.“ abgegeben. Zusammen mit Pavel Horsky wird Kretinsky in das West Ham-Board aufgenommen, dem weiterhin Chairmen David Sullivan und David Gold und Vice-Chairman Karen Brady angehören.
Laut britischen Medien ist Kretinsky mit ca. 180 bis 200 Millionen Pfund (ca. 210 bis 235 Millionen Euro) nun der zweitgrößte Anteilseigner der Hammers.
Kretinsky, dem auch der tschechische Erstligist Sparta Prag gehört und der dort Präsident ist, sagte, er sei “passionate about football”, schätze West Ham sehr und freue sich, Teil der „sehr aufregenden Zukunft“ von West Ham zu sein.
Karen Brady hieß die beiden Tschechen – mit den Spielern Coufal, Kral und Soucek sind nun schon fünf aus Böhmen bei den Hammers! – herzlich willkommen und meinte: „Wir sind sind stets bestrebt, uns weiterzuentwickeln, und Daniels Engagement bringt Investitionen, die die Position des Klubs stärken und bei der Entwicklung des Klubs helfen. Daniels starker Geschäftssinn und seine Fußballerfahrung werden für den Verein von großem Nutzen sein.”
Der Europa-League-Gegner von Rapid rangiert nach elf Runden und einem spektakulären 3:2-Sieg gegen Liverpool am vergangenen Wochenende, bei dem Kretinsky im London Stadium saß, auf Platz drei der Premier League. Die Hammers, deren seit Monaten in Hochform spielender midfielder Declan Rice derzeit an Grippe erkrankt ist und daher dem englischen Nationalteam absagen musste sowie Innenverteidiget Angelo Ogbonna mit einer Kreuzbandverletzung am rechten Knie länger ausfallen wird, sind in der Europa League-Tabelle ungeschlagener Spitzenreiter und bereits für die K.O.-Phase qualifiziert; im englischen League Cup stehen sie im Viertelfinale.
Der 46-jährige Kretinsky leitet den tschechischen Energieversorger EPH und ist Mehrheitsaktionär des Medienkonzerns Czech Media Invest, dem mehrere Print- und Hörfunkmedien in Tschechien gehören. Außerdem hält Kretinsky Anteile an der französischen Zeitung „Le Monde“.
Leider nicht mehr Didi…
Mit „Endlich Didi!“ habe ich im Oktober 2018 die Ernennung von Rapid-Legende Didi Kühbauer zum neuen SCR-Cheftrainer kommentiert. Etwas mehr als drei Jahre später heißt es beim österreichischen Rekordmeister Abschied nehmen von Didi: er wurde nach den beiden Niederlagen gegen Dinamo Zagreb (1:3) und Wolfsberg (1:4) und aufgrund des für Rapid untragbaren 7. Tabellenplatzes beurlaubt. Ein neuer Cheftrainer wird gesucht.
Die Leistungen in der österreichischen Meisterschaft waren heuer alles andere als zufriedenstellend, die Mannschaft von Didi Kühbauer liegt immer noch „unter dem Strich“ und die Sorge bei den Rapid-Verantwortlichen, dass das Meister-Play-off, so wie 2019 verpasst werden könnte, hat nun den Ausschlag gegeben, obwohl bei den Heimspielen in der Europa League durchaus ansprechende Leistungen geboten wurden.
Seit seinem Amtsantritt am 1. Oktober 2018 hatte Didi bei 141 Pflichtspielen die sportliche Verantwortung beim SK Rapid inne, fast die Hälfte davon konnte siegreich beendet werden (70), 25mal wurden die Punkte geteilt und 46mal behielt der jeweilige Gegner das bessere Ende für sich. Das bedeutet einem Punkteschnitt von 1,67 Punkten pro Spiel unter Kühbauer.
(Verglichen mit West Hams Managern würde Didi damit ganz gut liegen, kann aber mit West Ham unter David Moyes in der letzten und der laufenden Saison nicht mithalten: WHU-Legende Trevor Brooking hat während seiner kurzen Zeit als Interimstrainer die höchste Quote aller West Ham-Trainer mit 2.21 points per game, die anderen Manager seit den Neunzigerjahren liegen aber deutlich darunter: Spitzenreiter ist Billy Bonds mit 1.58 Punkten/Spiel, Sam Allardyce kommt auf 1.39, Bilic auf 1.41 and Pellegrini auf 1.30. Der aktuelle Punkteschnitt von David Moyes in dieser Saison beträgt laut Footy.Stats bisher sensationelle 2,18 Punkte, in der letzten Saison waren es 1,75. In den beiden vorangegangenen Saisonen, in denen Moyes zweimal als Retter vor dem Abstieg kam, kommt er dagegen nur auf 1,10 bzw 1,19 Punkte/Match. Das ergibt in insgesamt 113 Spielen einen bisherigen West Ham-Gesamtschnitt von 1,54 points per game für David Moyes, der damit noch knapp hinter Kühbauer liegt.)
In der Bundesliga endeten die Saisonen unter dem Burgenländer für Rapid auf Rang 7 (2018/19) und zweimal mit dem Vizemeistertitel (2019/20 und 2020/21); im ÖFB-Cup war zweimal gegen den Seriensieger aus Salzburg Endstation (2019 im Finale, 2020 im Achtelfinale), in der laufenden Saison steht Grün-Weiß nach Siegen über die Wiener Viktoria (6:0), Admira (2:1 n.V.) und Amstetten (3:0) im Viertelfinale.
International war Rapid 2019/20 nicht qualifiziert, konnte sich aber in der Europa League 2018/19 mit Siegen gegen Spartak Moskau und Glasgow Rangers sowie einem Remis gegen Villareal den zweiten Platz hinter den Spaniern sichern und zog damit sogar in die K.O.-Phase der EL ein (was – für mich unverständlich – in der auf der Rapid-Homepage erschienenen Würdigung verschwiegen wird).
In den Saisonen 2020/21 und 2021/22 wurde jeweils nach dem Aus in der Qualifikation zur UEFA Champions League (2020 gegen Gent und 2021 gegen Sparta Prag) die Gruppenphase der UEFA Europa League erreicht (2020 Platz 3 mit 7 Punkten gegen Arsenal, Molde und Dundalk; 2021 nach vier Spieltagen derzeit Platz 4 mit 3 Punkten gegen West Ham, Dinamo Zagreb und Genk).
Vor allem die Spiele in der Europa League unter Kühbauer haben mich fast immer begeistert. Aber leider waren weitere drei Jahre ohne Titel – das Warten dauert nun schon seit 2008! – und die schwachen Leistungen in der Bundesliga für Rapids Anspruch einfach zu wenig! Auch wenn manche Niederlagen aufgrund der Unzahl von Spielen seit dem Sommer, den zahlreichen Verletzten und dem für diese Belastung wohl doch zu kleinen Kader erklärbar sind: dass die „Rapid-Viertelstunde“ heuer vom aktuellen Team in ihr Gegenteil verkehrt wurde, indem viele Matches in den letzten 15 Minuten verloren gingen, und allzu oft der legendäre Rapid-Geist nicht mehr vorhanden war, muss man Cheftrainer Didi Kühbauer anlasten! Auch soll zuletzt die „Chemie“ zwischen Trainer und Mannschaft nicht mehr gepasst haben.
Danke, Didi! Schade, dass es zuletzt nicht mehr geklappt hat.
Massive West Ham On Stairway To 🔝
West Ham United showed that their place in the Premier League’s top four was fully warranted as they outmuscled Liverpool for a memorable 3-2 victory at a rocking London Stadium on Sunday. With this victory the Hammers leapfrogged the Reds in the PL table and are third now, level on points with Manchester City! “West Ham are massive, everywhere we go!”
(From The Telegraph) Victory for high-flying West Ham ended Liverpool’s 25-match unbeaten run in all competitions and lifted them above Juergen Klopp’s side into third place in the table.
An own goal by keeper Alisson gave West Ham a dream start, but Liverpool went in level at halftime thanks to a superb Trent Alexander-Arnold free kick.
Craig Dawson hit the bar for West Ham early in the second half as Liverpool wobbled at the back, before Pablo Fornals restored West Ham’s lead in the 66th minute when he was played through and his shot evaded Alisson.
Alisson was found wanting again eight minutes later when Kurt Zouma headed in West Ham’s third in the 74th minute.
The man who scored what proved to be the match-winning goal, declared after the match that West Ham were like one big “family”. Now it’s five years that this family has moved to the new London Stadium, but during these five years now in Stratford, rarely has a win been more ecstatically celebrated.
Though there was a late lifeline for Liverpool when Divock Origi made it 3-2 with a shot on the turn in the 82nd minute, but the hosts clung on for a memorable victory and could rightly celebrate that they have shown relentless consistency in seven games within three weeks (since the last international break) with six wins and one draw.
West Ham boss David Moyes, speaking to Sky Sports:
“It is a brilliant victory against a really good team. We played Thursday night too and to put in a performance with the energy to hang in at the end is great for the players. At the moment I’ve got really good players who play with incredible character.”
“We are still growing the seeds a little bit – but I think we are there [top three] on merit,” Moyes said. “I wanted to challenge whoever the teams will be in the top four. I hope one will be us. I’m hugely proud of the players. These players were close to relegation, now we’re pushing for Europe.”
By Europe, Moyes meant the Champions League, The Telegraph writes, and it was further to his and the players’ credit that this performance followed Thursday’s 2-2 draw against Genk.
It is now four league wins in a row for Moyes’ side and with the Hammers also in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals and the knockout phases of the Europa League, fans can rightly dream of more magical moments to come this season, BBC said in their match report. And that’s the new West Ham Way of David Moyes winning team (according to The Times):
Ultimately, you see that West Ham players reflect their manager, Moyes, a hard-working, grounded football man. These are Moyes’ men, a team united, following their manager’s instructions perfectly. Moyes, who celebrated his 1,000th game as a manager on Thursday, was managing against Liverpool for the 36th time and this was only his sixth win, and it felt so sweet that he celebrated Zouma’s goal with a jig on the touchline. It was hardly the Dashing White Sergeant but his joy and pride were understandable. He certainly had Liverpool reeling. Moyes and his staff drill the players extensively on set-pieces and two of their goals came from corners. His tactics of a low block and countering also paid off.
There are no egos in claret and blue, just good characters. Mark Noble, the club captain, embodies that. So does the current team captain, Rice, an established England international who would walk into any midfield in the country, yet is as down to earth as they come.
Where some players elsewhere copy-and-paste club-approved messages on social media, Rice types out his own heartfelt, emoji-filled posts, including a celebratory picture of him and a beaming Tomas Soucek, his midfield accomplice, after this famous win.

50 Years “Stairway To Heaven”
Zwei ganze Seiten widmete der KURIER diesen Sonntag einem legendären Rocksong: Vor 50 Jahren erschien Led Zeppelin IV mit “Stairway to Heaven”.

“Und wenn du ganz genau zuhörst, wird die Melodie endlich zu dir kommen. Wenn alles eins ist und eins alles, dann ist es das: ein Fels zu sein und nicht zu rollen…”
Nun, ich denke bei “Stairway to heaven” an Jesus und Gottes Liebe und nicht an ein unklares “Wenn alles eins ist und eins alles”. Ich denke an das Wort und das wahre Licht, das mit Jesus in die Welt gekommen ist (Johannes-Evangelium Kapitel 1) und daran, dass durch Jesus der Weg zu einer persönlichen Beziehung zu unserem Gott möglich geworden ist. ER ist der “Stairway to Heaven”. Durch das, was Jesus für uns – für jeden einzelnen – getan hat, ist der Weg zum Himmel frei geworden. Durch Seinen Tod am Kreuz ist der Weg zum Vater nun für immer offen und es ist eine persönliche Beziehung zu Gott, zu Jesus möglich. Und ich denke daran, dass wir, wenn wir IHM die Türe 🚪 öffnen, Gemeinschaft mit Jesus haben können (Offenbarung 3:20) und gerettet sind.
