A voice from Austria on BBC’s Wednesday Sports Show
Wednesday Sports Show 16/03/2011 with David Croft. “The best coverage of London sport anywhere around,” they say. And it was that evening that RapidHammer was given the opportunity to talk to fellow Hammers fan David Croft on BBC London Radio 94.9. And by the way: I have decided to apply for a membership in the new Hammers fans forum.
In the evening I had twittered that Mike Jones’ refereeing in Sunday’s FA Cup quarter final and Stoke’s second goal that should not have stood had been a disgrace. And I had added that Avram Grant’s FA charge because of his criticism of the ref was a disgrace as well. (Avram Grant had said that the referee, maybe having the desire to even things up after Stoke had complained bitterly about Hammers’ equalizer, ”gave everything for Stoke” in the second half.)
Some minutes later I saw a tweet on my timeline asking me to give BBC a call and speak to David Croft (pic: BBC) on his Sports Show.
No sooner said than done! Watching the Champions League game of Real Madrid v Lyon on TV became less interesting and I was caught by the thrill of waiting for BBC’s call-back. Listening to the radio show via internet, I learned about England’s next game of rugby against Ireland on Saturday and had almost given up hope that West Ham v Stoke was going to be discussed that evening. Credit to BBC for apologizing for the delay, and thanks to David for eventually giving me the call that gave me the chance to “talk West Ham” on BBC.
Talking West Ham
I explained my devotion for West Ham and my opinions on Higginbotham’s goal which would have done a rugby game honour and on the penalty which had not been given in West Ham’s favour. And I said that I was convinced that in this case Avram Grant’s emotional outburst after the tense game against Stoke should not be charged by the FA, as the West Ham manager usually is a very polite man, and often has refused to hold the ref responsible, regardless of West Ham’s deplorable position in the league.
Asked why I had become a West Ham fan I was able to explain that first of all I had been attracted by the colours of the club, adding that I was drawn to the Irons also by their traditionally attractive attacking style of play and their philosophy of nursing talent in their famous Academy of Football. Having said that, I learned that I was a very ordinary Hammers fan, as David told us that most of us say “Claret and blue” when they are asked why they have become devoted to the East Londoners.
Going to be a BBC correspondent?
Still our talk hadn’t come to an end, and I was able to drop the name of my West Ham weblog and mention the club I have always been supporting at home in Austria, Rapid Vienna. Last but not least David announced that he would phone me again and make me BBC’s correspondent in case of West Ham playing an Austrian club in Europe. Well, could be a long time coming until we know if David has kept his word! Anyway I’m looking forward to it – and, by the way, West Ham would be playing European football if the qualification was decided by the recent “form guide” of the last six Premier League matches. The “form guide” sees West Ham in fourth place right now!
Well, it was a nice chat with David Croft on his Wednesday Sports Show on BBC London. “Talking West Ham” with fellow West Ham supporters is great fun! And I hope my fellow supporters are pleased with having had an Austrian Hammers fan on the radio last night.
Making the “voice from abroad” heard
I think I’ve shown that devoted West Ham fans not only live in London, but are found all over the world, even in Austria! And to make this “voice from abroad” heard I have decided to apply for the new West Ham Supporters Advisory Board. If you want to support my application for taking part in this new fans forum send me an E-Mail to rapidhammer@aon.at.
I think the Board’s decision to set up a fans forum is a significant move in the right direction. I hope West Ham and its supporters will be able to make most of it. I want to take part, I will stay independent and I would try my best to help West Ham United move forward.

55 years ago: West Ham United 1-1 Rapid Wien
Durch den Fußball-Blog RAPIDHAMMER sind sie seit dreieinhalb Jahren im Internet vereint: der ursprünglich als 1. Wiener Arbeiter Fußball-Club gegründete “Sportklub Rapid” aus Wien-Hütteldorf und die bei ihrer Gründung als Thames Ironworks firmierenden “Hammers” aus dem Londoner Eastend. Im wirklichen Fußball-Leben sind die beiden Kultklubs aber erst- und letztmals vor genau 55 Jahren auf dem selben Rasen gestanden.
Ein einziges Mal trafen die beiden “Arbeiterklubs” bisher aufeinander: vor 55 Jahren im Londoner Upton Park-Stadion von West Ham United. Am 15. November 1955 endete ein Freundschaftsspiel zwischen West Ham United und Rapid mit einem auch für heutige Verhältnisse typischen Ergebnis: unentschieden.
Beim 1:1, über das in einem heute vor genau 55 Jahren erschienenen Zeitungsartikel aus der “Arbeiter-Zeitung” vom 17. November 1955 berichtet wird, erzielte Robert Dienst in der 10. Minute den Führungstreffer für Rapid. (Wie heute: West Ham liegt im eigenen Stadion meist schon bald nach dem Anpfiff hinten!)
Der Ausgleich in dem “under the lights” ausgetragenen Match – West Ham hatte zwei Jahre zuvor Flutlicht im Boleyn Ground installiert – fiel noch in der ersten Hälfte. Torschütze war Billy Dare (siehe den englischsprachigen Zeitungsartikel, in dem besonders Rapid Torhüter Gartner und Gerhard Hanappi hervorgehoben werden). Die offenbar recht hart geführte Partie (“Mehr Kampf als Spiel” schrieb die AZ!) endete schließlich 1:1, wobei Rapid vor 20.000 Zuschauern mit folgender Mannschaft spielte:
Gartner; Halla, Golobic, Hanappi, Höltl, Dienst, Probst, Bertalan, Bilek, Riegler, R. Körner
Am Wochenende vor dem Freundschaftsspiel hatte Rapid übrigens gegen die Admira auswärts 5:3 gewonnen (Tore: Bertalan, Dienst 2, Riegler 2) und 14 Tage später demolierte man auf der heimischen “Pfarrwiese” Sturm Graz mit 7:1 (Tore: Bertalan, Dienst 4, A. Körner, Riegler). Aber während Rapid in diesen beiden Spielen nur 7000 bzw 3500 Zuschauer sehen wollten, spielte man in London vor 20.000! Die vom großen Gerhard Hanappi geführte Rapid wurde in der Saison 1955/56 mit 43 Punkten (26 Spiele) österreichischer Meister vor Wacker Wien und Vienna, die höchste Zuschauerzahl erreichte man mit 45.000 im Wiener Stadion gegen Wacker (3:3).
West Ham dagegen war 1955 ein Zweitdivisionär und sollte das noch bis zum Aufstieg 1958 bleiben. Vor und nach dem “friendly” gegen Rapid spielte man gegen den späteren Absteiger Hull City und verlor auswärts 1:3 (Tor: Ken Tucker). Am Wochenende danach gegen Nottingham Forest setzte es eine 1:2-Heimniederlage (Tor: Harry Hooper). 1955/56 wurde man in der Second Division schließlich Sechzehnter von 22 Klubs mit 39 Punkten aus 42 Spielen.

“Rapid kennt man überall in Europa”

“He appears to have a heart made out of the sun”, kommentierte Freund Sam von Football United dieses Foto von Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink und dem RAPIDHAMMER.
Nun es handelt sich zwar nur um das reflektierende Symbol des Sportartikelherstellers, dessen Dressen der SK Rapid trägt. Aber der frühere holländische Teamstürmer (19 Einberufungen), der seit September für den SK Rapid Wien spielt, hat wirklich ein sonniges, freundliches Gemüt und ist für mich ein echter Sympathieträger.
Der “Klub der Freunde des S.C. Rapid” lud Adte Nuhiu, Raimund Hedl, Thomas Hinum und eben Jan VoH zur Mitgliederversammlung und der Holländer stellte sich dabei als im Deutschen durchaus sprachgewandt heraus. Vor allem am Ende des Abends plauderte er frisch drauf los, sodass man glauben hätte können, Jan sei schon seit Jahren – und nicht erst seit elf Wochen in Wien.
Vor Kurzem flatterte aber endlich eine Mitteilung der Staatsanwaltschaft Ried ins Haus: Das Verfahren wurde eingestellt – und das, ohne dass Jan VoH zu einer Einvernahme gebeten worden wäre. Anscheinend hatte sich der Staatsanwalt das Video vom Ried-Spiel angeschaut und befunden, dass da von einem strafbaren Tatbestand überhaupt keine Spur war. (Leider konnte die StA bei dieser Gelegenheit Adte Nuhius reguläres, vom Schiri aber nicht gegebenes Tor nicht nachträglich anerkennen – dann hätte der junge Rapid-Stürmer “Nutschi” [Bild] endlich seinen ersten Bundesliga-Treffer auf dem Konto!)England ist eine andere Welt, aber österreichische Spieler sind “sehr fit”
Wieder ein Johann bei Rapid Come on you boys in green!
On Thursday evening Rapid Vienna will play its second Europa League home game (against CSKA Sofia) – again in front of a full Ernst Happel Stadium packed with 50,000 fans.
Rapid Vienna’s own ground, the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium, is too small for big international games and therefore the club has had to move to the “Ernst Happel” for their Europa League games. The ground former called “Praterstadion” (left) was built in 1930 and had a capacity of more than 90,000 spectators after having been developed in the fifties. At this time Rapid beat Real Madrid 3-1 in the first game in the new stadium and later the Austrian national team beat Spain 3-0 and the Soviet Union 3-1 in front of a record crowd of 90,726.
My favourite games
Later the capacity was reduced to 70,000 due to installing seats instead of terraces, but the upper stands remained without seats until 1986 when the stadium got a roof and was made an all-seater. Still one of my favourite games there is a World Cup qualifier against the German Democratic Republic in 1976 when 70,000 seemed to be able to cheer Austria to victory, but the goal that was meant to be the 2-1 for Austria was disallowed by a crazy referee from Wales, Mr. Reynolds. Austria’s goalgetter Hans Krankl who lost his head was red-carded and Austria had to be happy with a 1-1. Nevertheless Austria was able to qualify after another draw away against GDR and an away win against Turkey, and at the finals in Argentina they famously beat Germany 3-2. Hans Krankl scored two goals, Austria went crazy and the famous goalgetter was transferred from Rapid Vienna to Barcelona after the World Cup where he was named “goleador” and helped Barcelona win their first European Cup trophy.
When the “Praterstadion” was reopened after having got a roof in 1986, 55,000 were able to celebrate another victory against Austria’s old foes Germany: this time Austria won 4-1. In 1993 the ground was renamed after the famous Austrian and Rapid player and manager Ernst Happel who had died the year before. In 2008 the EURO final took place in the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna which now holds approximately 50,000 fans. Austria’s 1-1 in the group stage against Poland is one of my other favourite games having been played there, but above all stands a lot of famous Rapid victories, the latest of them a 3-0 against Hamburger SV in the Europa League last year.
Tremendous atmosphere
Though the “Ernst Happel” has a running track and hence isn’t really loved by the Rapid supporters who prefer to watch their team in their own ground, the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium in Vienna’s fourteenth district Hütteldorf, the atmosphere at Rapid’s international games always is tremendous (right: “choreo” before kick-off; Rapid v Besiktas). The “Happel Stadium” was virtually sold out within less than a week from the start of selling Europa League three-games-tickets, and it took me and a friend almost five hours of queuing up to get hold of the much-demanded tickets for Rapid’s home games against Besiktas Istanbul, Sofia and Porto.
I’m sure the atmosphere on Thursday evening will be great again despite of the running track around the pitch and despite of Rapid’s weak league performances in the last weeks. Rapid’s skipper Steffen Hofmann as well as Dutch forward Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, a former Celtic and Hull City player, will miss the game because of injuries. Two weeks ago Rapid beat CSKA 2-0 in Sofia when both Hofmann and VoH scored, but now the Bulgarian side arrives with a new coach and two back-to-back victories.
Come on you boys in green!
I’m looking forward to an interesting evening, being part of one of the greatest support throughout Europe. After having eliminated Aston Villa Rapid has lost its first two Europa League games, but now after the 2-0 away against CSKA they are back to winning ways. If the Green-Whites keep their nerves they will be able to beat CSKA Sofia again and keep their chance of making the next round of the Europa League! “Come on you boys in green!”

Dreimal Aston Villa im August: West Ham verlor, Rapid triumphierte
Mein SK Rapid steht nach einem sensationellen 3:2-Auswärtserfolg über Aston Villa zum zweiten Mal hinter einander in der Gruppenphase der Europa League. Und nun soll zu den Hütteldorfern noch ein Stürmer kommen, der bis vor kurzem bei Hull City und davor bei Celtic Glasgow gespielt hat. Er soll den zu den Glasgow Rangers transferierten, dort aber für die Champions League aufgrund seiner Einsätze für Rapid nun nicht spielberechtigten Sturmtank Nikica Jelavic ersetzen: Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.
Da weht dann ein Hauch von Inselfußball und Premier League durch das Wiener Hanappi Stadion! … und natürlich das Ernst-Happel-Oval, denn die drei Euopa League-Heimspiele wird Rapid wieder im großen Wiener Stadion im Prater austragen, wie im Vorjahr, als im ersten Spiel der HSV sensationell mit 3:0 nach Hause geschickt wurde! Herr Jelavic, da könnten Sie ja auch einmal vorbeischauen!

Holzer, Berger, Schütz, Hattenberger, Haumer im EM Stadion in Klagenfurt (v.l.)
Freitag, den 30. Juli, fand in Klagenfurt zum zweiten Mal die Tagung “RECHT SPORTlich – aktuelle Rechtsfragen des Sports” statt.
Über 50 Teilnehmer hörten im Sportpark Wörthersee Stadion Vorträge von Univ.-Prof. Wolfgang Holzer und Rechtsanwalt René Haumer zu zivilrechtlichen und strafrechtlichen Fragen von Sportverletzungen sowie von Univ.-Ass. Julia Schürz zum Thema “Minderjährige in Sportvereinen”. Mag. Pia Haschke, Fachexpertin des österreichischen Sportministeriums für internationale Doping-Angelegenheiten, setzte sich schließlich mit “Markenrecht und Sport”, einem nicht erst seit dem Auftritt der “Bear Babes” bei der WM in Südafrika interessanten Thema, auseinander.
Das große Interesse und die anregenden Diskussionen zeigten, dass die von der Universität Klagenfurt (Ass.-Prof. Dr. Doris Hattenberger, Institut für Rechtswissenschaft) und Dr. Wolfgang Berger von der Rechtsanwaltskanzlei HASLINGER / NAGELE & PARTNER organisierte Veranstaltung auch heuer wieder den Nerv des an Recht und Sport interessierten Publikums getroffen hat.
Die im Vorjahr bei RECHT SPORTlich 1 gehaltenen Vorträge wurden mittlerweile im Verlag MANZ veröffentlicht.
