Gegen wen im März?
West Ham hat bekanntlich seine Europa League-Gruppe vor Freiburg gewonnen. Der FC Freiburg (GER) muss im Play-off gegen Champions League-Absteiger Lens (FRA) antreten, die Hammers dagegen spielen erst wieder im März 2024 im Achtelfinale.
Das sind die weiteren sieben Paarungen des Europa League Play-offs, die im Februar (15./22.2.2024) darüber entscheiden werden, auf wen die acht Gruppensieger im März im Achtelfinale des Europacups treffen werden:

Vor zwei Jahren spielte West Ham ebenfalls in der Europa League, gewann seine Gruppe, in der man gegen Dynamo Zagreb, Rapid Wien und Genk antreten musste – in Wien gegen Rapid wegen der Pandemie leider in einem „Geisterspiel“ – und eliminierte dann Sevilla (0:1, 2:0 n.V.) und Lyon (1:1, 3:0), bevor im Semifinale gegen den späteren Europacupsieger Eintracht Frankfurt Endstation war (1:2, 0:1).

Letzte Saison triumphierten die Hammers in der Conference League und gewannen ihren zweiten Europacup nach 1965.
Die erfolgreiche Conference League-Saison 2022/23 startete mit einem Play-off gegen Viborg. In der Gruppenphase waren Steaua Bukarest (FCSB), Anderlecht und Silkeborg die Gegner. Als Gruppensieger spielte man dann im Achtelfinale gegen AEK Larnaca (2:0, 4:0). Darauf folgten Spiele gegen KAA Gent (1:1, 4:1) und AZ Alkmaar (2:1, 1:0), bevor man das Finale in Prag mit 2:1 gegen Fiorentina gewann.
A special connection
In a long interview on West Ham’s official website and in the programme for Sunday’s home game against Wolves, Czech holding midfielder Tomáš Souček speaks about the best thing about being a footballer.
“A lovely question,” Tomáš said. “For me, it’s playing in front of thousands of people who are with you, supporting you and cheering you on. When you score a goal and you get to celebrate with those fans, and build that connection with them, it’s so special.”
He showed that he has a special connection and loves the fans also in the moment of West Ham’s worst defeat for years, a 0-5 trashing at Craven Cottage one week ago. The last time the Hammers lost by this margin was in summer 2019 when they were defeated in their first game of the season 0-5 by Manchester City. It was the beginning of the end of Manuel Pellegrini’s tenure at London Stadium who eventually was sacked and replaced by David Moyes on 29 December 2019 who soon after signed the Czech international player from Slavia Prague in January 2020.
After the final whistle at Craven Cottage which finally sealed the heavy defeat last Sunday, Tomáš Soucek did not immediately walk straight back to the dressing room with his head down, but stopped in front of the away end: for almost a minute he applauded the “claret and blue army” which never had stopped supporting the team despite their bad performance this afternoon in west London.
I had attended this game, meeting up before kick-off with Paul and some of his friends, using Barrie’s away ticket who had stayed at home entertaining his grand children this afternoon. Due to the game kicking off on a Sunday at 2 p.m., I tried to find a church not too far from Fulham’s Craven Cottage and attend a Sunday service before the game. I found out that St Luke’s Church, HTB’s most recent church plant near Earl’s Court, had its family service at 11 a.m. which was a perfect fit for me.
I had the pleasure to watch a special advent celebration there, called “Christingle”. This Christmas tradition, unknown to me so far, originates from Moravia and Germany and has spread across many churches and denominations since the 18th century. Christingle relates to the German word “Christkindl” and is used to celebrate Jesus Christ as the Light of the World and as our saviour. It consists of
- an orange representing the world,
- with a candle pushed into the centre of the orange, then lit, representing Jesus Christ as Light of the World,
- a red ribbon wrapped around the orange, representing the blood of Christ, and
- dried fruits or sweets skewered on cocktail sticks pushed into the orange, representing the fruits of the earth and the four seasons (picture).
I had a nice chat after the service with pastor Dave Matthews and found out that most of the people of this neighbourhood supported Chelsea and not Fulham. Dave asked me if I was a pastor myself when I mentioned that I had attended “Alpha Experience” two months ago at HTB Brompton Road. “No, I’m a lawyer,” I answered, “like Nicky Gumbel was before becoming pastor at HTB.”
Well, that wasn’t the only misconception this afternoon: Erion, one of Paul’s friend standing beside of me on the terrace, thought I lived in Notting Hill and worked in a London law firm. That would have been nice, but I had to explain to him that when I mentioned that we “lived near Notting Hill Gate” this was true for just four days – we stayed at a hotel there this time…
And it also turned out not to be true when at half time with 0-3 down an other guy standing next to me said that it was “difficult, but not impossible” to come back into this game. But no, this WAS impossible for the Hammers players seemingly exhausted, tired and partly even sick. On that “bad day at the office“ they had only played well the first 15 or 20 minutes, but then it showed that this team had played all autumn every three or four days and on this day lacked drive and urgency. David Moyes said after the game that playing two games week in, week out and especially the Hammers‘ 2-1 away win in an other London derby at Tottenham on the previous Thursday seemed to have taken its toll.
When I texted Barrie that it seemed that he had made a wise decision not to attend the Fulham game and entertain the grandchildren at home instead (this was the reason I got his ticket) he wrote back; “Best part of West Ham is the fans. As Paul knows only too well I enjoy myself by meeting up before and after the game with a group of friends. The game itself is usually the worst part of the day. “🤦♂️😂 That’s typical West Ham sense of humour, isn’t it?
But half a week later West Ham bounced back and convincingly defeated Freiburg 2-0 in what was their final game of the Europa League group stages. They secured their progress to the round of the last sixteen in Europe for the third season running with this win. So everything’s okay then?
Well, it seems it’s only the travelling fans who do not become bothered when the team is behind, and tirelessly sing and clap also when West Ham are losing. The West Ham followers on social media and some parts of the 60,000 supporters which fill the London Stadium when the Irons play at home (something Fulham obviously is not capable of since they have got their expanded Riverside Stand) are a more fickle lot. The “Moyes out brigade” makes themselves heard quickly every time the results don’t go West Ham’s way.
Following a visit of Wolves at London Stadium on Sunday the Hammers have to travel to Liverpool midweek trying to reach the semifinals of the League Cup for the first time since 2011/12.
“We’re champions of Europe, that’s what we are,” the travelling fans will sing again then, but depending on the Hammers’ performance the opposition supporters will possibly reply with a loud “but you’re still shit!”
Well, let’s be optimistic and expect the claret and blue army has something to cheer about in the coming games. Come on you Irons!
PS: One week after the defeat at Fulham a dominant West Ham looked a different side to the one that suffered a 5-0 thrashing and won 3-0 at London Stadium against Wolves (goals: Kudus 2, Bowen).
West Ham Win Again!
For one month now, West Ham Utd have not tasted defeat home or away in the Premier League and Europa League. They are “on a purple patch”, BBC wrote in their match report from the Hammers’ latest 2-1 away win over Spurs, but it was not only luck, the Irons put in a resilient, organised display in North London and again came from behind to snatch all the points from the jaws of defeat after having conceded early on in the 11th minute. Two second half goals from Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse meant that West Ham have won 10 points from losing positions in the Premier League this season. Only Brighton (11) and Liverpool (15) have recovered more.
“I think it is a huge win to come here and win against this side,” Moyes told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“I’m pleased with how we were resilient and diligent in our work, organised, defensively structured and we were always a threat as well.”
West Ham have won five of their past six fixtures across all competitions while Tottenham suffered their fourth defeat in five and have dropped points from a winning position for a fifth consecutive game.
West Ham last defeat was at Brentford away (2-3) on 4 November, but since that game the Hammers have won five times (Olympiakos, Nottingham Forest, Burnley, Backa Topola and Spurs) and drawn one match (against Crystal Palace last weekend).
On the back of these fine run of results – some of them snatched with late winning goals in the process – the east Londoners now will play an other derby and are hosted by Fulham next Sunday.
I am looking much forward to this game because I will be in the away end at Craven Cottage on Sunday!
Then Freiburg come to the London Stadium for the final game of the Europa League group stages next Wednesday, and some days before Christmas the Hammers have to travel to Liverpool for the quarter finals of the League Cup after having eliminated Arsenal in the last round of this competition.

Super Tomáš Souček
Tomas Soucek is back to his best: he has hit the back of the net in all of his latest five games for club and country.
Souček scored the winner in the Europa League game against FK TSC Bačka Topola on Thursday night (1-0), against Burnley last weekend (2-1), and before the international break against Nottingham Forest (3-2). For the Czech Republic the 28 year old scored the 1-1 against Poland and one goal in his country‘s win over Moldova, helping his country qualify for the European Championship in Germany 2024.
The 1,92m man started his career at Slavia Prague, joining their youth team as a 10 year old from hometown club Slovan Havlíčkův Brod. Havličkuv Brod is a small town halfway between Brno and Prague.
Souček’s goal against their Serbian opponents on Thursday evening was especially important given Freiburg’s 5-0 win at Olympiacos. If the Hammers had not won courtesy of Souček’s 89th minute goal they would have been leapfrogged at the top of UEFA Europa League Group A ahead of their last European game of the year on 12 December at London Stadium. Now a draw with Freiburg would be enough to win the group and avoid a play-off game in February, proceeding straight into the round of 16.
Most of Souček‘s five goals came close to the final whistle, he scored for the Irons in the 89th, 91st and 88th minute and for his home country in the 90th minute. Only in their very important draw with Poland which won them automatic qualification for the European Championship the Czech equalised as early as in minute 49.
West Ham will need Souček’s goal scoring abilities as their influential duo Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio are out injured. Now the other players have to step up the plate to help the Irons keep up with their busy schedule of 10 games, in three competitions, between now and the end of the year. Let’s hope the performances will improve, compared to the last games in which only the results were fine, but the display of David Moyes’s men has to improve when the Hammers now go into a run of three consecutive London derbies against Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Fulham before they host Freiburg at the London Stadium.

Erster Heimsieg seit August
Der SK Rapid hat einen neuen Trainer: Robert Klauß ersetzte Zoki Barisic, und bei der Premiere des deutschen Trainers gelang endlich wieder ein Heimsieg. Das, wenn auch mühsame 1:0 gegen Blau-Weiß Linz war der erste Meisterschafts-Sieg im Allianz Stadion seit 5. August. Dann kam noch das begeisternde 1:0 gegen den AC Florenz in der Conference League-Quali, aber seit 24. August wartete man in Hütteldorf auf einen vollen Erfolg – mehr als drei Monate!
Kein Wunder, dass bei diesen Resultaten Zoki Barisic nicht mehr am Steuer sitzt, auch wenn die Leistungen seiner Mannschaft zeitweise gar nicht so schlecht waren und nur die Konsequenz beim Toreschießen fehlte. Sportdirektor Markus Katzer suchte und fand überraschend schnell Robert Klauß, der am 26. November präsentiert wurde.
Hoffen wir, dass der neue junge Trainer mit Red Bull-Vergangenheit (Klauß war in Leipzig Assistent von Nagelsmann), der bisher erst eine Cheftrainer-Station aufzuweisen hat (beim 1. FC Nürnberg), die Rapidler wieder zu Hütteldorfer “Kanonieren” macht, auch wenn’s ein bisserl dauern wird. Heute war das Spiel der Grün-Weißen bei Temperaturen knapp über dem Gefrierpunkt noch nicht unbedingt dazu angetan, die Fan-Herzen zu erwärmen.
Es gelang aber der erste Sieg durch ein Tor von Grüll, und das erfolgreiche Debut sollte auch Rückenwind für die letzten beiden Runden vor der Winterpause geben. In der Tabelle ist Rapid aktuell noch immer unter dem Strich, aber immerhin verbessert auf den 7. Platz.

PS: Auch für Union Berlin gab’s endlich wieder einen Punkt in der Bundesliga, den ersten seit August: mit einem 1:1-Remis gegen den FC Augsburg in der “Alten Försterei verbesserte man sich um einen Tabellenrang! Die “Eisernen” sind nicht mehr Letzte, und sie haben auch einen neuen Trainer: Der Kroate Nenad Bjelica, in Deutschland noch unbekannt, folgt auf den Schweizer Urs Fischer. Bjelica trainierte einst die Austria in Wien, war zuletzt bei Trabzonspor in der Türkei und davor u.a. bei Dinamo Zagreb und Osijek.
West Ham – unverändert mit David Moyes als Manager – gewann durch zwei “Last Minute goals” 2:1 beim Tabellenletzten Burnley und ist nun Neunter in der Premier League-Tabelle.
Zwei Rekorde geknackt
Harry Kane und Erling Haaland haben sich den hier in unregelmäßigen Abständen vergebenen Ehrentitel „HANSE DER WOCHE“, schon bevor das Wochenende vorbei ist, mehr als verdient.
Die beiden Angreifer setzten mit ihren Toren in den Spielen von Bayern München am Freitag (1:0 auswärts gegen Köln) und Manchester City am Samstag (1:1 gegen Liverpool) neue Bestmarken in deutscher Bundesliga und Premier League: Harry Kane (30) überholte Gerd Müllers Bestmarke aus der Saison 1968/69: damals hatte es in zwölf Spielen 17-mal „gemüllert“, Kane kann‘s aber heuer noch besser. Sein Treffer in der 20. Spielminute war Saisontor Nr. 18 für die Bayern.
Der um 7 Jahre jüngere Erling Haaland knackte den Premier League-Torrekord von Cole (Andy, nicht West Ham‘s Joe!). In seinem erst 48. Ligaspiel erzielte der Norweger sein 50. Tor für „City“ und ließ damit den zweitschnellsten „50er-Scorer“ weit hinter sich: Andy Cole brauchte dafür vor dreißig Jahren (1993) 65 Partien in Diensten von Newcastle und Manchester Utd.
Der 23-Jährige Norweger führt nun eine mit Stars besetzte Gruppe von Angreifern an, wobei Mohammed Salah (72) und Fernando Torres (68), Ruud van Nistelrooy (68) und Alan Shearer (66) die nächst schnellsten Premier League-Scorer hinter Andy Cole sind.
Bis zum Ende der letzten Ligasaison hatte Haaland erstaunliche 36 Tore erzielt und damit den Rekord für die meisten Tore in einer Saison mit 38 Spielen gebrochen.
Harry Kane stellte ebenfalls in der PL-Saison 2022/23 einen Rekord auf: er überholte mit insgesamt 280 Toren in Pflichtspielen für Tottenham Jimmy Greaves (266 Tore) als “all-time leading goalscorer” seines früheren Klubs!
Beide “striker” haben den “HANSE DER WOCHE” übrigens schon früher einmal verliefen bekommen: ▶️ Harry Kane, als er sein 267. “competitive goal” in den Diensten der Spurs erzielt hatte; ▶️ Erling Haaland dafür, dass er auch schon aei e ersten 30 Tore die wenigsten Spiele in der Premier League-Geschichte brauchte.
Österreich-Deutschland 2:0
Österreichs 2:0-Heimsieg zum Abschluss des Länderspiel-Jahres 2023 gegen Deutschland war überragend. Durch zwei wunderschöne Tore von Sabitzer und Baumgartner besiegte das über die gesamten 90 Minuten dominierende rot-weiß-rote Team Deutschland klar: >>>Spielbericht
Aus dem tollen österreichischen Team stach Christoph Baumgartner noch hervor, der nicht nur das 2:0 erzielte, sondern auch den Assist zum ersten Treffer gab und sich damit den Titel “HANSE DER WOCHE” verdient hat (siehe unten).
Das österreichische Team vollbrachte mit seinem Sieg auch ein historisches Double: Der Erfolg über den großen Nachbarn war nach jenem im Juni 2018 in Klagenfurt der zweite in Folge, das gelang dem ÖFB-Team letztmals im Jahre 1931.
Vor 92 Jahren wurde die deutsche Auswahl am 24. Mai in Berlin mit 6:0 bezwungen, Anton Schall erzielte einen Hattrick. Keine vier Monate später, am 13. September 1931, feierte Österreich im Praterstadion einen 5:0-Erfolg, mit Matthias Sindelar gab es erneut einen Triplepacker.
In den darauf folgenden 87 Jahren standen sich Österreich und die DFB-Auswahl ganze 30-mal gegenüber, in diesem Zeitraum ging der ÖFB nur zweimal (1978 mit 3:2 in Córdoba und 1986 mit 4:1 in Wien) als Sieger vom Platz. Nun gelang selbiges binnen fünf Jahren.
Deutschland verlor indes sein sechstes Spiel im Jahr 2023 und stellte damit den Verbands-Negativrekord von 2018 ein, damals absolvierte man allerdings 13 Partien – heuer nur deren elf.
HANSE DER WOCHE:
Christoph Baumgartner
Den Ehrentitel des „HANSE DER WOCHE“ (© RapidHammer) bekommt für sein wunderschönes Tor, den Pass zum ersten Goal und dafür, dass er mit seinem Treffer gegen Deutschland seit seinem Debüt am 4. September 2020 die meisten Tore für das österreichische Team erzielt hat, diesmal RB Leipzig-Offensivmann Christoph Baumgartner.
Der aus St. Leonhard am Hornerwald in Niederösterreich stammende Offensivspieler von RB Leipzig war bei beiden Toren gegen Deutschland involviert: Zuerst die Vorlage zum 1:0 durch Sabitzer (29.), und dann war es er selbst, der nach herrlichem weiten Pass von Alaba auf Gregoritsch, der den Ball für “Baumi” prallen ließ, den chancenlosen DFB-Keeper Trapp zum 2:0-Endstand überhob (73.).
Unter dem aktuellen DFB-Bundestrainer Julian Nagelsmann debütierte Christoph Baumgartner, der in der Jugend von Horn und St. Pölten spielte und dann 2017 nach Deutschland wechselte, in der Bundesliga-Mannschaft von TSG Hoffenheim (2019). Im heurigen Sommer knackte er mit seinem Wechsel zu RB Leipzig für 24 Millionen Euro den heimischen Transfer-Rekord.
Seit seinem Länderspiel-Debüt im September 2020 gegen Norwegen war der Treffer gegen die DFB-Elf bereits der elfte im rot-weiß-roten Trikot. In diesem Zeitraum hat kein anderer Spieler mehr Tore im ÖFB-Team erzielt. Legendär ist sein Treffer bei der EURO 2020 in England, als Baumgartner gegen die Ukraine mit seinem 1:0-Siegtor Österreich zum ersten Mal in das EM-Achtelfinale schoss.
In der Zeitung „Österreich“ und schon früher in der „NÖN“ konnte man übrigens über „Baumi“ lesen, dass er jeden Tag und natürlich vor allem auch vor Matches betet.
In einem Interview hob Baumgartner seinen christlichen Glauben hervor, erzählte von seiner Pfarre St. Leonhard am Hornerwald (Pfarrbezirk Gars am Kamp) und sagte, der Glaube sei seine Kraftquelle. “Ich spreche täglich zu Gott. Das ist für mich ein Weg, der mir ein sehr gutes Gefühl gibt und viel Kraft für die nächsten Aufgaben”, sagte er im Podcast “Ich bin. Mit Dir” der Diözese St. Pölten. Vor jedem Spiel bete er: “Das hat mir bis heute sehr viel geholfen.”
Die „Kronenzeitung“ schreibt in einem aktuellen Artikel, dass Baumgartner im BORG St. Pölten einst sogar die siebente Klasse übersprang und berichtet von einer aktuellen, beachtlichen Initiative des 24-Jährigen: 2022 gründete er mit der privaten Organisation eines Bekannten in Ost-Uganda die Christoph Baumgartner Training School. Dort gibt es fortlaufend Schneider- und Friseurkurse für junge Mütter, die aufgrund einer frühen Schwangerschaft die Schule abbrechen mussten.
Heuer kam die „Baumi Junior School“ hinzu. Dort erhalten 80 Kinder aus dem Budaka District eine Schulbildung, einschließlich Mittagessen (oft die einzige Mahlzeit am Tag für sie). Aktuell sind sieben Lehrer, ein Koch und ein Security angestellt. Die Rekonstruktion von mehreren nicht mehr funktionsfähigen Brunnen in diesem Gebiet ist derzeit in der Planungsphase, um möglichst viele Kinder mit lebensnotwendigem Wasser zu versorgen. „Das sind alles Dinge, die für uns selbstverständlich sind – in Uganda aber nicht“, sagt „Baumi“.
